my favorite Modest Mouse line would be from The Ocean Breathes Salty:
for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. You wasted life, why wouldn’t you waste death?
as for my favorite lyrics of ALL TIME…the entire song Inside Out, by Eve 6. its sooo amazingly well done. some of the lyrics are
I would swallow my pride
I would choke on the rinds
But the lack thereof would leave me empty inside
I would swallow my doubt
Turn it inside out
Find nothing but faith in nothing
The tick tock of the clock is painful
All sane and logical
I want to tear it off the wall
I hear words and clips and phrases
I think sick like ginger ale
My stomach turns and I exhale
Or am I origami?
Folded up and just pretend
Demented as the motives in your head
Pretty much anything by Jesse Michaels (Op. Ivy, Common Rider)id\s really good lyrically
One good song:
The position being taken is not to be mistaken
For attempted education or righteous accusation
Only a description just an observation of the pitiful
Condition of our degeneration Walls made of opinions thru which we speak and never listen
Ceiling made of pride vicious and self satisfied
Door thats made of rage hard and slowly aged
Always closing tighter with every war that’s waged
Room without a window cant see out…
Floor is made of lives wed gladly end to stay inside
Corners made of borders, borders made of law and order
Painted with the words of politicians and religion
Plastered with the wreckage of our cultural division
Room without a window cant see out…
If the thread asks for a single favourite line, then for me it must be the one that immediately sprang to mind when asked the question:
“I’d trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday…”
(Me and Bobby McGee, written by Kris Kristofferson (sp?) although - and this is true - I first heard it by Bill Haley and the Comets. If anyone has the album “Rock Around the Country” we might be able to do business.)
Or, at the other end of the lyrics spectrum: “Heaven above-able made you so lovable, love me lovable child.” Yeuch I have that on a Bix Beiderbecke tape somewhere.
It’s more than just one line but…
“Run to the bedroom in the suitcase on the left you’ll find my favourite axe.
Don’t look so frightened this is just a passing phase, one of my bad days.”
Pink Floyd.
Or if it’s just one line …
“I have become comfortably numb”
Also Pink Floyd.
I’m going to have to go with cathwood on Pink Floyd.
“Shine on you crazy diamond” for one line.
I would have to go with Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 for more than one line:
“We don’t need no education
We dont need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone”
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is very well done and very complex… and I love it.
The glove compartment
Isn’t accurately named
And everybody knows it
So I’m proposing
A swift orderly change
'Cos behind its door
There’s nothing to keep my fingers warm
And all I find
Are souvenirs from better times
Before the gleam of your tailights fading east to find
Yourself a better life
I was searching
For some legal document
As the rain beat down on the hood
When I stumbled upon
Pictures I tried to forget
And that’s how this idea
Was drilled into my head
'Cos it’s too important
To stay the way it’s been
But there’s no blame
For how our love did slowly fade
And now that it’s gone
It’s like it wasn’t there at all
And here I rest
Where disappointment and regret collide
Lying awake at night
And there’s no blame
For how our love did slowly fade
And now that it’s gone
It’s like it wasn’t there at all
And here I rest
Where disappointment and regret collide
Lying awake at night all night
When I’m lying awake at night
this is from an interview with john lennon, not song lyrics, but it’s relevant…
“One has to humiliate oneself to be what the Beatles were, and that’s what I resent . . . About all we can do is do it like fkin’ circus animals. I resent being an artist in that respect, I resent performing for fking idiots who won’t know – who don’t know – anything. 'Cause they can’t feel – I’m the one that’s feeling, 'cause I’m the one that’s expressing what they are trying to. They live vicariously through me and other artists.”
“I’d rather be happy and poor, than have it all and still want more.”
Big Wig - “13”
stay asleep… (1999)
A lot of the stuff bigwig writes is really good.
“he says he’s tired of working overtime and troubles weighing on his mind in class. he said he’d like to pack his bags and run away, and never look back. he says this life of mine’s like doing time for crimes that i didn’t commit. he says if life is just a game, i’m on the losing team - and i just want to quit.”

I like clever and interesting lyrics but for beauty I don’t think anything compares to the love ballad “Ghost” by the Indigo Girls. The image formed in the first verse is gripping but the metaphor formed in the second verse is breathtakingly beautiful and the song even includes references to the Trojan war. These girls sing wonderful harmonies to boot. I have included the entire song because it’s so easy to cut and paste.
There’s a letter on the desktop
That I dug out of a drawer
The last truce we ever came to
From our adolescent war
And I start to feel a fever
From the warm air through the screen
You come regular like seasons
Shadowing my dreams
The Mississippi’s mighty
But it starts in Minnesota
At a place that you could walk across with five steps down
And I guess that’s how you started
Like a pinprick to my heart
But at this point you rush right through me
And I start to drown
And there’s not enough room in this world for my pain
Signals crossed and love gets lost and time passed makes it plain
Of all my demon spirits
I need you the most
I’m in love with your ghost
I’m in love with your ghost
Dark and dangerous like a secret (Don’t tell a soul)
That’s whispered in a hush (Don’t tell a soul)
When I wake the things I dreamt about you
Last night make me blush
When you kiss me like a lover
Then you sting me like a viper
I go follow you to the river
Play your memory like the piper
And I feel it like a sickness
How this love is killing me
But I’d walk into the fingers
Of your fire willingly
And I dance the edge of sanity
I’ve never been this close
In love with your ghost
(oooo)
Unknowing captor
You’ll never know how much you
Pierce my spirit
But I can’t touch you
Can you hear it
A cry to be free?
Oh, I’m forever under lock and key
As you pass through me
Now I see your face before me
I would launch a thousand ships
To bring your heart back to my island
As the sand beneath me slips
As I burn up in your presence
And I know now how it feels
To be weakened like Achilles
With you at my heels
And my bitter pill to swallow
Is the silence that I keep
It poisons me
I can’t swim free
The river is too deep
Though I’m baptized by your touch
I’m no worse at most
In love with your ghost
You are shadowing my dreams
(In love with your ghost)
(In love with your ghost)
Ooooooo
(In love with your ghost)
