The victories of the Yankees over the Red Sox and the Marlins over the Cubs is, in a small way, a metaphor for American cultural and political life: Same-old, same-old.
I was really hoping for a Cubs/Sox world series.
The only good thing I can say about the Yanks/Marlins series is that it has relieved me of the obligation of watching and I’ll be able to spend that time on something, perhaps, useful.
“same old, same old” maybe that’s true as far as the Red Sox and the Cubs going another year without getting to the series, yes, I’ll agree. And the Yankees in it again okay, I’ll go with you on that one too.
I live in South Florida so I’m happy, but you can’t take anything away from this year’s Marlins. This is an amazing story.
Here we had two championship series go to a game seven, into extra innings. This was some exciting baseball.
Beyond the disappointment from a Cubs or Red Sox fan’s perspective, I see nothing to complain about. I’m looking forward to a great series.
I had to stretch to make this particular “metaphor” work as far as the Marlins are concerned, but since they were in it, what, 5 years ago, I let it go. I take nothing from them.
I’m so sick of the Yankees I could puke. My dad, who grew up in the Bronx, used to take me to Yankee games which was fair enough; I loved those times together with him. But as soon as we were old enough to go to games alone, me and my friends were off to Shea.
I hope the Marlins win, but I’m not going to watch.
During the Mariners’ self-destruction after the All Star break we (my household) held to the thin hope that Boston wouldn’t knock them out of the wild card. But once the fat lady sung we were definitely on the Cubs/Sox band wagon.
The Marlins deserve to go. The Yankees are such a rival we just love to h*te them.
Having said that I went to game 4 of the 2001 World Series. There is no experience like a WS game in Yankee Stadium. That was the night of the first ever November baseball when the game ran past midnight. I even got a Yankee hat.
Back in Seattle I wore the hat while ice skating with the kids. A Jr. Hi’ish aged girl said the hat was really bothering her and asked me to take it off!
The hat is still in great shape, sits in my closet. Hasn’t seen the light of day for quite a while.
I hope you slapped her silly. Jeez, the nerve of some people. It’s one thing to express your opinion, but to suggest someone take off a hat cause you don’t like it! I have been accused here of being, what’s the phrase, ah yes, overly sensitive, but that just takes the cake.
I recently sent a sister poster here at RSU a PM about her sig which I hate. But I never suggested she take it down, fer crying out loud.
i used to have the emblem of my favourite rugby (union - for those who know what i’m talking about) team tattooed on my shoulder.
it was a remarkably un-me thing to do, to get a sportsteam’s emblem as a tattoo but that just made it more me
whenever one of those disturbingly pointless discussions about how stupid u r for supporting a certain team broke out (normally with supporters of ‘the other team’), pulling up the sleeve of a shirt was a very nice way of saying ‘shut up, sit down’
(the original tattoo was badly done and after a couple of salvage attempts i admitted defeat and after witnessing the solar eclipse last year, had it covered with a black disc with stylised ‘rays’ represented by fading triangles on the one side and a celtic ‘swoosh’ on the other. the swoosh ends in a yin yan and is mirrored [but in negative] on the other end. as soon as i find a design that does it justice, i want to complete the piece with a shading-only representation of a ‘crystal’ contact juggling ball - damn! how did we onto my fav subject? )
I briefly overheard on the radio today (didn’t catch the whole story) that someone is buying or wants to buy the rights to make a movie about the young man who reached for the ball during game six.
Did you record it on your spiffy new twin deck tape player/recorder? I still think that thing is only good for breaking the record of “largest drop onto cement ever attempted by a twin deck tape player”. Also, where were they showing the game??
they had it on about 4 huge tv’s and 30 little ones in the bar,you had to be 21 years old to be in there though so you probobly didnt notice.im glad the game was over when it was or i may have missed the universe II preview
this came thru from one of our prep-sites today
i thought i’d share
Just in case we need to remember how bad it can be… here are 20 major
events that have occurred since
the Chicago Cubs last laid claim to a World Series championship:
Radio was invented. (Cubs fans get to hear their team lose)
TV was invented. (Cubs fans get to see their team lose)
Baseball added 14 teams.
(Cubs fans get to see and hear their team lose to more clubs)
George Burns celebrated his 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th,
80th, 90th and 100th birthdays.
Halley’s comet passed Earth - twice.
Harry Caray was born… and died. Incredible, but true!
The NBA, NHL, NFL, IHL, and ISL were formed.
(Each of those Chicago teams have each won championships)
Man landed on the moon.
(As have several home runs given up by Cubs pitchers)
Sixteen U.S. presidents were elected.
There were 11 amendments added to the Constitution.
Prohibition was created and repealed.
The Titanic was built, set sail, sank, was discovered, and became
the subject of major motion pictures.
The latter giving Cubs fans hope that something that finishes on the
bottom can come out on top.
Wrigley Field was built and becomes the oldest park in the National
League.
Flag poles were erected on Wrigley Field roof to hold all of the
team’s future World Series pennants.
(Those flag poles have since rusted and been taken down)
A combination of 40 Summer and Winter Olympic games have been held.
Thirteen baseball players have won the Triple Crown.
(Several thanked Cubs pitchers)
Bell-bottoms came in style, went out of style, and came back in.
The Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and the
Florida Marlins have all won the World Series.
The Cubs played 14,153 regular-season games. (They lost the majority
of them)
Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and New Mexico were added to the
Union.
Go Cubbies!
And one for the Yank’s:
Twas the last game of the series, and all through the city,
The last 85 years have been really shitty
Now you can’t blame losing every year on bad luck
85 years not a win? Means Boston just sucks!
On Jeter on Bernie on Jason and Sori,
On Jorge on Roger on Zimmer and Torre
Wakefield comes in, with knuckling pitches
Expecting to make the Yanks lineup his bitches
When what to his knuckle ball ass should appear?
But a guy who’s called Aaron? He sounds like a queer!
He looks at the batter and blows him a kiss,
Tosses a knuckler, expecting a miss.
But then to his horror, from this guy named Boone
He slams that white meatball. Bang! To the moon!
Carry this team and extend their huge curse
Throw at us Pedro? You’ll leave in a hearse.
To fans of the Yanks, sit back, watch the screen,
Now let’s all say it together: …1918!!!
I’m really enjoying this series. But it’s tough on the nerves . As a Marlin fan, I sure wish we had one of those “automatic” closers like the Yankees’ Mariano Rivera.
