X-Box vs. Playstation 2

which is better? Pros and cons

or should i just wait till next summer and get Playstaion 3 ?

Get both. Scratch that, get the PS2, XBox, Game Cube, and PC. If you have anything left, get a G5.

PS2 for me. I played one on my Nephew’s new PS2 when he was visiting. It plays DVD’s too. X-Box is my second choice. That too also plays DVD’s. If I was buying one Tomorrow, I’d go for the PS2. Just watch some Software Games also they can be a bit expensive. Here in Australia that is. It’s Shocking. Nearly $100 to just buy one that is. There are some about $100 or less and there are some good ones about lately. Do shop wisely and you get a bargin, Especially the ones on Specials or so much off, Say 15% off PS2 and XBox Console and Games at Wal Mart or K-Mart.
Good luck Jagur.

It depends on the games you like. If your favorite games are on the PS2 then get a PS2. If your favorite games are on XBox then get the XBox.

Games for PS2 seem to be less expensive than XBox games. There are also more PS2 games in the bargain bins at the stores than XBox games. PS2 also has more game titles than XBox, but what really matters is which one has the games that you like to play.

Another plus for PS2 is that the PS2 has more accessories like steering wheels than the XBox. The XBox only has very few steering wheels and they’re not the fancy force feedback type. PS2 has the better steering wheels.

A minus for the PS2 is that you have to get a memory card in order to be able to save any of your games. That makes the memory card a mandatory accessory. The XBox can save games to it’s built in hard drive so you can get by without a memory card.

I have an XBox. I think I got it just because I live so close to Microsoft and I must have fallen under the effects of their local mind waves. I’m not a hard core gamer. I don’t play console games that often. It’s fun. I like it. But a PS2 would fit my needs just as well.

isn’t it possible to accesorize your PC and make all these consoles obsolete?

i dont acually have any favorite games…the last time i had a console was an original Nintendo.

does that mean its going to crash?

Since the XBox does have a hard drive in it you don’t want to be too rough on it. Hard drives don’t like to be banged around a lot.

I haven’t had any crashes on my XBox unless you count all the crashes when I drive off the road or into the wall in RalliSport Challenge or Sega GT 2002.

One interesting thing that you can do with the XBox is rip CDs and store the music on the hard drive. Some games will allow you to play the music from the hard drive as background music as you play the game.

Yes, but building and maintaining a gaming PC is expensive. You need the fast (expensive) graphics card, fast processor, fast memory, etc. Then you also have to deal with more software issues, software incompatibilities, OS issues, OS optimizations so the games work better, etc.

With a console you just plug it in and it works.

i was hopeing there would be a few more opinions here…thanx J_C, GILD and djm though.

im still wavering between the 2 but im leaning twords the X-box since its so much more of a machine and i already have a DVD player.

the main hang up from reading things other places seems to be the X-box controler, some say it is to big.does it vibrate like a PS controler does? and is it battery free like the PS controler? i know that for the game cube controler to shake it needs batteries, and that stinks…

The normal gamecube controller doesnt require batteries and it has a rumble feature. The wireless controller, the wavebird, does require batteries.

i got the xbox last Christmas. i like to think it’s more for my son, but i actually enjoy it also. it’s also our first dvd player. i got xbox mainly for mechassault. that game is really cool. rally sport challenge is another great game–i enjoy racing it and watching the replay of my beautiful turns. can’t really say too much about any other platform because this is our first platform.

the controller is smaller now than the first ones, and it does vibrate. when racing, i really don’t see the need for a steering wheel because the controller kinda feels like one also. i’d go to a game place to play and see how the controller feels to you.

Actually out of these the best would be getting a PS2 and G5 only. Then getting virtual XP for the G5 and a high speed internet line to download all of your PS2 games.

In my opinion, get the PS2. Why?
Pro’s

  • larger amount of good games
  • DVD player (yeah I know you already have one)
  • you can play PS1 games and make the graphics smoother
  • if you make a few adjustments on your PS2, and you have a high speed internet connection on a PC, you can download and burn playable games
  • PS2 games might be compatible with PS3
  • a lot of good PS2 games are cheap, or free if you use the downloading method
    Con’s
  • you need to buy a memory card
  • it doesn’t come with a hard drive
  • there are only two controller ports

The fact that you need a memory card is a small price to pay and the PS3 isn’t coming out anytime soon. Also if you really wanted it you could just buy a hard drive and modem for the PS2.

Xbox
Pro’s

  • Some good games
  • four controller ports
  • hard drive (memory built in)
  • there should be more add-ons coming out in the future
    Con’s
  • really, really, heavy. the Xbox itself is really bulky and so are the controllers
  • not enough good games are exclusively for Xbox
  • the only good games are mostly multiplayer oriented
  • a DVD player add-on costs more
  • all add-ons in the future are going to cost you more money
  • it seems that games are usually more expensive
  • it’s running on a windows OS so it crashes sometimes

The prices are the same on the consoles so it really comes down to the games.

Good exclusive Xbox games:
Halo
Dead Or Alive 3
(I’m sure that maybe there are more but I don’t have an Xbox)

Good PS2 games:
Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, (3 coming out next year)
Silent Hill 1, 2, (3 coming out in a week)
All Final Fantasy games FF7 through FF10(part 2) and older FF games 4-6 and Chrono Trigger
Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City
Tony Hawk 3, 4
Mortal Kombat Dark Alliance
There are a lot of games that are great for PS2 but these are just my personal favorites
If you want more good PS2 games I can list them but I know from personal gameplay that these are great and also you an download emulators for NES and SNES and make a CD with roms for gameplay on the PS2.

I would reccomend the PS2 because I’ve had a good experience with it. Also if you’re going to get an Xbox most of the people I’ve know mostly played multiplayer games which is the best aspect of the Xbox. If you have more questions, ask away. Hope I’ve helped and you haven’t already bought one…

whoops that should have said Mortal Komat Deadly Alliance. Also, check out the Tekken games because they rule, and Gran Turismo 3 is great if you like racing and if you like Dragonball Z, a cell shaded Budokai 2 is coming out soon. Man, I really want to play video games now…

Must point out also on the PS2 that there is a Remote Control Unit available as my Nephew got one also. Get a 2nd Hand-held controller as it only comes with one. (Why I don’t know) The X-Box Might or Will have a Remote Control Unit. The X-Box is quite Heavy than the PS2. Because of the Hard Drive. I think zach_jucha have sum it up there as I agree with him and John Childs and Others than myself have it cover for you. Thanks Jagur.

David

GET A X-BOX!!! THEY RULE!!! or you could just go outside and ride your unicycle instead cause unicycling is the funniest thing ever.

Unicycling is funny? (scratches out the I)
Oh, now I get it.

On with the topic…
PS2 RULES!!!

I’m with you Jax. PS2 For me.

David

Go with the Xbox

Go with the Xbox. It’s got better sound and better graphics. The original controllers were too big for some people, but they now ship a smaller controller. And yes, the controller does vibrate, and does not need batteries.

Two advantages to Xbox are Xbox Live - great online playing - and having four controller ports, instead of two on PS2.

Then again, the games are the most important thing. Halo is one awesome Xbox game, there’s a bunch of others.

thanx alot! and you guys know who you are, this thread is getting very good BTW ,highly in favor of the X-box…as well…

the more i talk and listen, the more i here how absolutely awesome the X-box is…i still havent made up my mind but the X-box people are way more apocaliptic about there choice…its almost biblical :astonished:

since most of the good answers came from lurkers, maybe they would like to lurk on a similar thread

i registared as “total nOOb”
