Does anybody ever have this problem? I have rather particular tastes in music, and I am a bit snobby in what I choose to listen in that odds are, if you suggest something, I’m probably less likely to listen to it than if I had found it on my own.
So here is the problem I have about 32.1 GB of music, ranging in styles from classical, to metal, to hiphop, to jazz. Pretty much something of everything and a whole lot of nothing. Despite having so much music though I often find myself having no clue what I want to listen, sometimes I can listen to anything on my computer and I still won’t find what I wanted to be listening to.
Anybody else have that problem? Too much music and yet not what you are looking for?
I only have about 15 GB of music, but it’s all stuff I like, so…I just listen to whatever I want. Check out my last.fm profile for a list of what I listen to mostly.
Yeah, I sometimes feel the same way. But then I usually find something that I’m in the mood for or end up not listening to anything.
Do you have some all-time favourites? Listening to those helps to solve the problem sometimes. But don’t overdo that, though.
You should download the soundtrack to the play Avenue Q, I just downloaded it recently and I’ve been listening to it a lot, it’s SO SO FUNNY!!
You’ll love it no matter what.
Hah one of the problems is of all that music, I do like it all, but I can never find what suits my mood at a particular point.
I have tried things like pandora before, and although they do find similar artists, they don’t find completely different ones that you might enjoy, I can listen to the same style whenever I want, but when I want something different its difficult.
i download songs that appear in unicycling videos, such as defect or Ill. Whenever i listen to these songs, i can just picture whats happening in the video and it just makes the song better. haha. So if you find a song you like in a uni-video then i would listen to that, it reminds me of unicycling.
That is a good sized collection of muzak…except you’re missing all my favorites, like John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Cat Stevens…you have a lot of Beatles though that is good (:
I also have some Sean lennon (John’s son), and thats just the beatles that I have on my computer my mom also has all of their albums (original vinyl of course)
well i run my muisc on a secondary pc (fanless mini ITX) and keep switching the tracks cause the problem with me is that i suually get a song in my head just before the previous one has finished and I NEED TO LISTEN TO THAT PARTICULAR song!
I’ve found myself getting out of bed, switching my secondary monitor on and typing on my keyboard to find the right song !
and i’ll just have to aw you with my 27.2GB of music on my main pc. and 108GB on my secondary PC… although i’ll confess 72GB of that is uncompressd FLAC files… from revox tapes…
The music download generation needs to learn some self-control. Have some purpose to your downloading. Don’t just download anything and everything just because.
I think there is also a psychological element involved. The music that I listen to almost exclusively is music I have a physical CD for. There is something in having that CD that makes the music more (what is the word I’m looking for here?). I get more of a connection with the music. If I only have a digital file of the music, legal or otherwise, I’m not likely to listen to much it or enjoy it as much. Downloading is a way to explore music and discover new music, but for listening to music I want a physical object.
I’m also from a generation where I grew up listening to albums – complete albums. I still can’t get used to listening to a playlist that mixes up songs from different albums. Putting my music on shuffle is an abomination for me. I have a playlist for each album and that’s how I listen to my music.
Hmmmm… I just had an interesting thought. Maybe this explains why some people personalize befriend their iPod or other music player so much. They don’t have physical albums to personalize and look at so they resort to personalizing the object that holds their personal albums. The problem there though is that iPods and other personal players only last a few years before they get replaced. Then you lose the personalization and the resulting identity with the music inside and have to start over again.
Hah well thats the thing that I find impressive about my music, is that there are only three torrents in there. The M-flo stuff (I heard about him, downloaded his library and liked one song in the whole thing), the sound effects library and the Beatles stuff. Everything else I either own on cd, have owned on cd (legit backups where the cd died somehow or was lost), downloaded through soulseek, and borrowed cds from friends or family.
So probably only about 10 percent of it is from Torrents.
I couldn’t agree more, If you noticed in that list, pretty much all of it is complete albums, I hate random songs, and I hate shuffle. If I listen to music on shuffle it completely destroys the flow of the music. Music on an album was created for the purpose of being heard in the order it appears on the album, and if you listen to it randomly then you are missing out on oh so much of what could be there to enjoy.
I also enjoy owning cds, especialy since more and more now record labels are making cds more interesting to buy, cool artwork, little stories and the like, cool packaging (I love packaging), are all examples of cool reasons to own a cd. The problem I have is I either can’t find the album for sale, or its in a far off forein country, or I can’t afford it. Usualy the latter.
I still try and buy cds whenever I can afford it but usualy my money is spent on unicycles, hopefully once I start working I will be able to pick up a few cds I have been eyeing though.
I say classical very loosely to be honest, in some of the Malice Mizer songs, and some of the other stuff sounds quite like classical or opera. Actualy moreso opera
I concur! I used to download like whole albums to see if I liked the artist, then keep it even if I didn’t, stuff like that…these days I only download albums of artists I’ve heard before and I know that I like, and a lot of the time I just buy it because…
You need to find some of the essential classical classical pieces that includes things like Beethoven. There are lists that list things like 50 essential classical works or 50 essential opera works. Lists like that are a good way to start exploring the real classical stuff. From there you can find what you like and expand in that direction.
Another way to explore is to take a music history listening class in college. It’s a great way to learn about classical music and listen to a variety of classical music.
About half of my CDs are classical.
You can actually find many of the popular classical pieces for free legal download now. Often they’re older recordings.
Im just like you. I have tons of music and sometimes I just can’t find what i wanna listen too. When this happens, I just make a playlist and a bunch of random songs that I like and that are all different types and listen to that.
When I was little I used to listen to lots of classical (along with green day for some reason). I used to have alot of Beathoven, and Mozart. I don’t know why but I just don’t like it as much anymore, maybe I got oversaturated when I was younger so now I’m just less interested in it.
