WritER Thread

To go along with Kyle’s thread of homegrown writing, who are your favorite writers?

I have just rediscovered a hibernating love for reading and have devoured several great books during my hours at work (night receptionist at sloooow business).

Bill Bryson: A good one to mention because he transends cultural boundaries. An American turned Brit turned American again. By far the funniest and most enjoyable writer in my experience. Favorite books by him are “A Walk in The Woods” and “Neither Here nor There”.

Douglas Coupland: I hope Chuck and Corbin are reading this… Microserfs sparked my love for Coupland followed by many other quirky books that make great use of typography. Microserfs is about a few Microsoft employees in the early 90’s. Something about the Silicon Valley and Apple’s “Inifnite Loop” make me drawn to Cali hardcore!

We’ll that and its nutso concentration of unicyclists.

Considering writing can also be music, and i mean mainly lyrics, i’d have to say

Ray Davies

Billie Joe Armstrong (this and the 2 after are ones of my favs, i love green day)

Mike Dirnt

Tre Cool

Johnny Ramone

Joey Ramone

Mick Jones

John Feldmann (this one is one of the tops)

and of course, paul mcartney

Richard Dawkins
Terry Brooks
Terry Goodking

Bill Bryson is decent, im reading short history of nearly everything right now. the only book ive read by him

+1 and add KRS one to that list!

Irvine welsh,
whoever Translated Koushun Takami’s Battle Royale,
Buck 65
Busdriver
There are a few other MC’s that I really like but they are usualy pretty hit or miss and its usualy just funny stuff they say, its good but nothing THAT groundbreaking.

Yeah, Band on the Run was brilliant…

or…

I just listened to Bryson’s Shakespear and A Short History of Nearly Everything in audio book format during a long drive.
I’d read History before, but figured you’d never take all of that in in one reading and I was right.

I’m a big fan of Hunter S Thompson and Tom Robbins.
Joseph Heller and Norman Mailer.
Mark Haddon and Audrey Niffenegger also warrants a mention.

Doc Daneeka

I don’t know if anything prepared me for the known bureaucratic universe as much as Catch-22 did.

Edit: I think I’ll find this one and read it again tonight.

Allen Ginsberg
Kurt Vonnegut
Joseph Heller
Richard Brautigan
Bob Dylan
Edward Abbey

Art Vandaly. :sunglasses:

Writer threads and concurrent affairs. A riveting tale of locks and resources.
