Hi folks. I am a brand new member looking for tips on seat comfort for women. I’ve read all the comments from men, but I don’t think our problems are quite the same. I’ve been riding off and on since childhood, but now unicycling is my main form of exercise. I could ride for hours if only my seat wasn’t killing me. I’m 42 years old and a mom of two (ouch-if you know what I mean!) I’ve tried several different brands but they all feel exactly the same to me. I read the comments about the sheepskin seat cover but am having no luck reaching Tom Miller. Does anyone know if it is still available? Help!
I hate to break it to you like this, but you should post your question in Rec.Sport forum.
More people read it, and give knowledgable advice.
You might also try searching on Rec.Sport. They’ll advise you on gel inserts, foam inserts, air seats, leather covers, etc.
This is JUST CONVERSATION, alright?! Nothing truly meaningful here, OK??!
If I knew you, I would probably make some dirty female jokes, but I’m not going to…
I’m just going to recommend trying an air seat, or a gel cover.
There have been threads on this subject before, try using the search function to find them, I’m sure they’ll contain some usefull information.
HI there.
I’m 41, female and have been riding for nearly 2 years. I have 3 kids. I too feel your pain. The best seat I have tried so far is the new Kris Holm freeride. But it certainly is a problem.
If you haven’t tried an airseat yet, you might want to. The new KH saddle with the groove in it should be good too, or a gel seat.
You can also try tilting your seat back as much as you can, so you have a flatter spot to sit on, putting more on your but instead of your perineum area or above.
There are also a lot of guides written up where people have modified the foam in their seat, so you can experiment there.
Goodluck.
I’d agree with Jerrick. I’ve a KH seat and I found it incredibly uncomfy initially too (It softens with age). I’ve tried out my friend’s Miyata airseat and the difference is obvious.
Jerrick has given some very valuable advice here.
My riding pal, also a woman, perfers a seat on rails so that she can adjust the tilt up somewhat. She also is finding a KH freeride seat quite comfortable. We have both tried air seats and neither found them particularly helpful. But then again it might work for you; you never really know until to try different seats out for yourself.
Strangely I have found a stock KH to be my best option however I have, for quite a while, wished for a simple handle for my 29’er so that I could have more options in terms of shifting weight on longer rides.
I don’t think anyone is manufacturing sheepskin seat covers. I have one that was made to fit a Schwinn (old style) seat, but it was probably one of a very small production run from 20 years ago. It makes the seat look cool, and is a comfort improvement to the 24 year old seat it covers, but don’t expect it to be an improvement on today’s good seats.
Your best bets are to experiment with either wider or narrower seats. An easier way to do this might be as described above, a KH or other seat with a rail adapter so you can try different angles. Tilt the front up more and it gets wider, plus flatter (depending on the specific seat).
Please let us know what works for you! So far for me, bike shorts and putting lots of weight on the handle are the best solutions.
why would the seats hurt chicks so much i mean theres nothing there to get squished realy ?
shows your knowlage of female anatomity
There plenty there to be affected.
I think the main spot is the perineum, but it could be more on the Vulva, mainly the Mons Pubis. Id hope the saddle isn’t causing soreness pass that.
Paded cycle under shorts?
I am female.
I use air saddles and stock nimbus saddles. Cycle shorts are great.Get rid of pants with seams. I have two pair a fancy brand cut for women and a $20 addidas mens. I prefer the addidas. If you can’t stand the spandex look, wear thin nylon shorts over the cycle pants.
Shift your weight around, put weight on your ischeum (bony points on the bottom of your butt) on long rides. Ride more frequently, you’ll get used to it. Stretch before. Deep lunges. Learn to ride standing, most of your weight on the pedals, for some spells.
I was on the heavy side of “normal” or “healthy” weight range for a while and I had a lot more seat pain. Now I am in the middle of normal (BMI 22) and now seat pain isn’t much of an issue at all.
It smarts. Don’t give up, though, you’ll find what works for you.
i actually thought you were a guy for about 2 months when i first joined. my bad sorry
That’s okay. I thought you were a guy, too.
this is good for that;)
I use padded cycle shorts and on 2 of my unis an air seat ( the 2 I do most miles on) In the air seats I have an 18 inch tube in a heart shape under gemcrest leather covers and not tooo much air. My hocky uni has a standard viscount saddle as I like that one to not give much for better grip on tight turns and teh like. I’ve only done moderate miles ( no more than 6 in one go) since having my baby , but as he was born by C section I may not have the same issues as you?
oh shit that was awesome.
Definitely.
