so if you aren’t familiar with the tv show Wipeout…
Basically they’re making one in Canada…i applied…and got a callback! so my audition is this week so i guess ill know soon enough if i’ll be on the show haha.
thought i would share since they called me back because they loved the mountain unicycling stuff i sent them.
it went realllllly well! and i did show off the unicycle skills. i even got to jump one of the contestants in a talent content and won a t-shirt haha.
the interview went really well too. they asked what i would do with the money ( i said student loans of course, then a new motorcycle haha. but priorities first!) then my shout out was “CRAAAZY KOOOOZY COMMMIN ATTCHA!”, then my victory dance was a robotic/ unicycle guitar/ spin move… how could that fail?
all in all it was a good long day and i had a lot of fun and met some crazy people!
Do they have you do any obstacles? I would think they would be worried about contestants who freeze up, panic, quit, and run out of steam.
I’m always amazed at how clueless people are for getting through some obstacles. It’s gotta be way harder than it looks. But they must keep the contestants from watching the others, because they clearly don’t learn from watching, like we do at home.
Remember, in reality TV, the reality is pre-planned and heavily edited. True reality does not require auditions. I would assume the actual competition likely took place in a different order than how it ends up being presented in the final show.
Also I agree it’s probably way harder than it looks, for anyone who thinks it doesn’t look hard. After the second time climbing out of the water, most people would be pretty winded. Even if you’ve watched people go ahead of you, you’re experiencing each challenge for the first time, so in some ways you have to “guess right” to get past things.
I definitely think it’s derivative of the many Japanese shows that beat up their contestants while they do silly things. Even down to seeming to emphasize the quirkyness and non-athlete-ness of most contestants!
The other night on the American show, I saw one of the contestants showing off on his unicycle for a bit before he made his first run. A Torker. And the guy did pretty well, making it most of the way to the final round.
I’ll be going to Buenos Aires on October 22, for 8 days, to be a contestant on Wipeout Canada. I hope to be able to meet up with some unicyclists there in my spare time. Anyone know riders there?
I got back from taping an episode of ‘Wipeout Canada’ yesterday. Yi-haa, a one week expense paid trip to Buenos Aires! What an incredible experience. Everyone agreed that the course is 10 times harder than it looks on TV but even though there were some injuries (not me), everyone of us would go back on a moment’s notice to do the course again.
Unfortunately though, I wasn’t able to connect with any unicyclists while I was there.
