We’re supposed to be the world’s leading nation, and our “best leaders” are a bunch of twits who can’t take their eyes off a dollar bill long enough to see how they’re screwing the common citizen.
The folks who are making our laws don’t know squat about the industries which they’re regulating… so instead they take the lead from whomever greases their palms the most.
The “balance of power” has determined that corporations are people, paving the way for the almighty dollar to take control of the nation. The puppeteer has removed his hand from the puppet and shoved it up our collective ass. We’re now the singing, dancing fools that will fiddle until the Chinese come to collect the massive debt owed unto them.
For the past few years, every time I vote, I don’t care who the alternative is… I want the incumbent out of office. I have yet to see someone with enough spine to stand up against corruption and greed, and until then, I’m only giving folks a one-term chance to show their true colors.

I find it funny how much folks expect things to change from an election, as if a couple new faces will change years of policy, law, and investment.
I skipped voting for while, back in the eighties after Dukakis lost, it was all just too much BS.
Now I’m back to voting, not that it’ll make a difference, but I’m trying to be mature about the whole thing, voting that is

Yup, and a possibility of getting things done without so much politicking…but then that’s probably me dreaming again.
So then, is it unfair that we don’t have elected representatives that are representative?
More people will vote once voting is made easier, i.e from a computer, it’s just a matter of time.
Well no matter how we vote, this is a loaded question. Depending on what level of government control you think is “right”, your definition of fair representation might be different.
Nah, I just think it would make for an interesting change if everyone voted. Not sure if it would make things better or worse, sorta depends on who you are, but it would make for a more representative government.

Honestly, I’m not totally sure I’ve ever wanted true representation. For one, there are far too many cultures and ideologies here to accurately “average” all of them, so I’m not sure if it’s even possible - plus, our country is full of idiots and self-entitlement.
I don’t really care who represents us, to be honest. As long as they respect the boundaries that I think government should have - national defense, foreign relations, basic stuff like that - it could be a midget Muslim woman for all I care.
Now having said that, I do still vote, just because some politicians agree with what I just expressed, and most don’t. But as far as “representation”, that’s not that big a deal to me.
I’m not a US citizen & probably shouldn’t weigh in here, but Maestro8’s comments above, pretty much sum up most political parties world wide.

I can still hardly believe that I survived Son of a Bush being elected twice.

Sadly, a fair number of folks worldwide didn’t fair so well during the Bush/Bush era. But some folks got rich during that time, so hurray for them!
Politics are the same everywhere, the folks who should be in office are not interested in taking the heat, so we’re left with self serving types from which we are left choosing between “bad” and “not as bad”.
It’s not possible to have a representative government.

GILD, did you live in the States previously? Are you really in South Africa? How is that? I lived in Guine Bissau for a year, pretty different from the States
I dream of New Zealand, the wife feels the same, our biggest hold back is being able to see the kids and what to do with the animals. I see a plan coming together once the kids are well into college and my mom retires.
I’ve always lived in South Africa, I just developed a moderately severe fascination with your politics a while ago.
It’s clearing up nicely now, but I’m going to finish the course anyway.
Not really knowing any other place to live, I suspect I’m always likely to say that South Africa is great place to live.
Then again, that’s probably what the frog said about his really nice and warm pot as well.
We do occasionally think about getting out of here because of the crime and some of the public statements made by some public figures.

Which workers do the South African police kill when they try to go on strike? the miners, yes, the radio announcers, no.
That has not happened in years in the USA, but it doesn’t mean those days won’t return.
