I, for one, was truly saddened by her death. Only because, when I look at the state of affairs on our planet and all that we really need to work on, the best thing the media could come up with for a headliner was all this Anna Nicole crap. How could something this mundane dominate the headlines for the better part of a freakin’ week? Our priorities as a nation are in the toilet.

I think people care about this because they are told to. A lot of people are just followers so when that is what the news covers that is what they think is important.
After reading your post, I rolled my eyes so far they fell out. I’m now typing blind so excuse any errors.
Mainstream media “news” covers things that attracts and entertains viewers / readers, not what is really important… hence stories from the entertainment industry get priority. I’m sure most people can draw the line between real news and entertainment news. Can you?

I think you’re giving the American public more credit than they deserve. It’s not a matter of gullibility. They think it’s important because this whole machine has hyped it up as being important. A huge number of people in this country are entirely apathetic to anything that actually matters.
It’s not important, but it’s entertainment and entertainment is important. People, in general, want to be happy, and entertainment is part of that. People aren’t apathetic to the things that actually matter, but they may have little time to invest in things that have little effect on them for the amount of effort it takes to achieve the goal. To be happy, people need to somehow make money to pay for the things that provide their livelihood and for things that make them happy. Whatever these things that you refer to that matter more, they are lower down on the priority list and therefore they may not get to them. They are not apathetic to them.
