My TV was on, and here I was checking email, when all of a sudden, the TV picture went black, made a high pitched squeal for several seconds, and then I heard this loud kind of “crunch” that seemed to come from the inside of the tube! Then the whole room totally became filled with the super strong smell of burning electronics!
I HATE that smell! I ran over as fast as I could and pulled the power cord. I really thought that by the smell of it, a fire was imminent! I’m just glad this happened when i was home! I was ready to get a new TV anyway, and I’ve had this one for at least 8 years.
Lucky for me TV tubes are a vacuum inside, if there’s a physical breach in the tube, it sucks air in, thus the implode result. And on a larger scale, space is a vacuum as we all know, and any breach in your space suit would cause you to instantly deflate as every last bit of air would be sucked out of your body. (EXploding might be less painful as you would be blown to bits and die instantly…well, depending on the explosion you might just be badly maimed.)
By “on”, do you mean fully on, with a picture and sound, or “off” but still plugged in? This is, of course, a misnomer, as it’s still “on”, just not with a picture. It’s maybe similar to a computer’s “sleep mode”, whereas when you hit the “on” button with your remote, it comes on quickly, retaining the time, date and preferences.
So I don’t know whether unplugging it, or just turning it “off” via the power button would have prevented this from happening, (at least if I wasn’t home) or if it still could have happened regardless as long as it was still plugged in. Puzzler. Unplugging a TV and or all your appliances when not in use would be like disconnecting your car’s battery every time you park it. I might call an electrician and ask about this since I’m really curious now haha! :o
Apparently you still use quite a bit of electricity when appliances are left plugged in but off. My wife unplugs everything. This is good for our electricity bills but a pain when you walk into a dark room and try to plug in a lamp which is the only light source.
Doing a little searching online I found a few people with similar TV problems. The “frying” of in the wiring, “arcing”, “going to ground”, is usually caused by excess build up of dust inside. But once it’s fried, it’s pretty much toast. Until I get a replacement, I’m using my TV/VCR combo that was sitting in my office unused. Only thing is it’s only a 9" screen, lol! :o
I’m wondering if I should buy brand new, or look for a really good deal used, like this one? Of course, this is a flat panel so it’s more, but there are TONS of used TVs not too old in the $50-$100 range. I’m happy to just stick with my previous 27" screen size; nothing bigger will fit in my media cabinet. And the one listed is still under manufacturer warranty.
“tevo”? The main reason I even watch TV is TCM and the Family guy. Watching it on a laptop is just not the same. Just as I would rather watch a first run film in the theatre than on dvd.
But yeah, less TV=more time to ride! Haha, as if riding 7 days a week isn’t enough already!
