Man, Jon Stewart and Stephen Cobert are as funny as ever, it’s gonna be tough for those writers to make their case now!
Meaning???
Haha, I saw some clips from their latest shows. Good stuff.
Sorry, no.
They are funny, but not nearly as good as when they have writers.
Had i not heard of the writer’s strike, i would not have even noticed
They all seem to be doing pretty great so far. The problem is keeping it up week after week. One person cannot come up with enough material for a daily show like that. It is nice, though, to see a little break from routine on the Tonight Show. I wish they’d mix it up more.
The question in the Writers Strike is not about whether they write good. It’s about video rights for things like iTunes, YouTube and other electronic post-distribution. A guy in your business should really be on their side!
Or even whether they write well, for that matter.
Oh, sorry. “Write goodly.” Goodish? Goodishly?
they don’t need to…not with Bush, Hillary, Guiliani…
I was watching Colbert yesterday and he is still very funny. But he is using his character only for the laughs, the jokes didn’t have a lot of substenance to them.
The great thing about his show is his character is so defined it makes writing easy, but he has some of the best writer’s in the business that know how to turn a punchline, and without them it lacks a little punch. Right now he is riding on his character that was built up on the backs of writers, it can’t last long.
Politically I hope the writer’s never get their jobs back, but as a comedy writer I am sad to see the absence of all the great talent out there. I am torn.
it can if he does the ‘Stephen Cobert push glasses back on’ move after all his bits
that’s all he needs to do all show long
Actually, his character was probably developed by him on his own, over a period of years. Same for most top comedians. But comedians also develop their material over many years. They don’t get the same audience every night, so they always have to have new material. That’s where the writers come in.
I first saw Jay Leno in a comedy club in 1984. Funniest standup I ever saw, as I remember it (sore ab muscles). We saw him again about two years ago doing standup at a casino near here. Some of the jokes were the same ones from 1984. They were still good, but they lost a bit of their punch as we used to repeat some of them so they were well known to me. He seemed tired of his constant work schedule and wasn’t nearly as funny as the 1984 version.
Of course that 1984 show was in a tiny comedy club, while this more recent show was in a huge showroom with thousands of seats in it. Not exactly the same environment, to be fair.
That’s right. Those writers are selfish for wanting a small piece of the future earnings.
Heck, they’re nowhere near as important as the person who does the art for the DVD cover, and that guy takes a piece of every DVD sold.
A writer got paid for his work on the TV series, so why should he get paid a few pennies when I buy the DVD? For that matter, maybe the actors and director shouldn’t get anything when the DVD is sold, either.
And why should song writers get anything when their music is played on the radio, or when someone uses it on a CD, or in a movie.
Let’s dump this whole royalty thing. Then we won’t have anyone concerned about pirating. I guess that’s how the writers feel, like a bunch of pirates are profiting off their sweat.
Go pirates!
Support peg legs and their parrots!
