Hey MUniEd
Well Done! and welcome to the forum
100 miles on a November day… that’s well impressive.

Anybody know who is the youngest unicyclist known to have completed a 100 mile-in-a-day ride? In prep for my upcoming 24hr/200 mile ride, I will be doing a century sometime next week, and if all goes as planned, 14 year old Augie Tourdot will be joining me. So I’m wondering, if he he completes the century - which I have no doubt he will - would he become the youngest unicyclist to do so? I’m guessing John Foss may know the answer.

Beau was 15 in 2007 when he did his. I think Jack Hughes was already older as well when he did his. Rob Muellerleile is about the same age as Beau so also was older than 14. I don’t know of anyone else on this list that’s younger - maybe someone else does?

I joined the 100 mile club today!

I rode the Erie Canal Trail from Henpecked Park in Greece, NY West 50 miles out and back. I started at 6:39 am and finished at 6:23 pm. Beautiful trail!

The 100 mile record attempt, so I’ll add it in below here. (Guinness are taking their time to get back to me so they may or may not certify this in the future.)

Note that my final time (6:18:39) is a few seconds longer than we announced on the day. There was an error in my spreadsheet calculation which was later discovered.

Has Roger tried it again? :sunglasses:

Well done, that’s pretty impressive average speed for that long!

“Fewer than 100 people are known to have completed…”

In a quick count I come up with 88 unique riders. So I think it’s still correct to say “fewer than 100 people worldwide are known to have completed a unicycle century…”

Cool. If only there were a spot for that on a curriculum vitae.

There is! Hobbies and interests section :sunglasses:

Finally here

I finally got to the club! I did twice the metric century last Saturday. When I merged all my gpx files from various parts of the day (GPS didn’t stayed that long) it turned out I did 204 kilometers. Bit less than 10 hours of riding on my G32 according to Strava https://www.strava.com/activities/1153486165. More info will come in coming days on my blog probably.

How!!!

What saddle do you guys use to ride that long? :astonished:

I was using Nimbus Stadium this time. My previous long ride (above 100km) was on KH Zero. Good saddle is important, but good padded shorts are same important. Additionally some lubricants help to survive.

I just use a leather thong under my long-distance “y” fronts…and if there are any other riders who have done this at 64 years old,or more, please tell.

Because the competitive edge starts here! 100 miles at 70 years.

Great Gatsby!! I can feel the adrenalin-rush as I mount my multi-gym

This list is too vague. Everyone on it seems to acheive the same type of route, at the same time, at the same age…because those factors are not listed.

This is not my way of shouting, “unfair!” …but, I feel, it is (the list) unrealistic!!!

I mostly ride the road, nothing else. I have done the ‘hundred’ twice…on the road. Traffic lights, ‘T’ junctions, roundabouts, major intersections…etc. etc. I feel unfairly grouped in this list. Unless riders can tell me, who rides the road"!

In my mid-60’s it was easy…including the white-van-man who knocked me off the uni and said he didnt see me…as I fell on his bonnet!! Who cares, I roll with the punches and ibuprofen. I completed a hundred miles that day at 64.

I am having a love affair with the two 36’ers that could take me on my next 100 miles. I aim to ride the road.

I want to know, in the 100 list, who rides the road, or who does’nt…and what age group they come in

We could ask people to fill in more details about their rides, and many will probably come back at some point to do so. Of course, not all “roads” are created equal as well. An urban route is likely to have much more intersections and necessary stops, for example, compared to a ride out in the country.

you’ll see in the big list a group of five riders that did their centuries on June 3, 2007. That was all road, completely around Lake Tahoe, with a side spur up to Truckee and back. I was also on that ride, and completed a circuit of the lake for my first 72-mile ride. Lots of camber, lots of hills, and lots of elevation! The entire ride was above Tahoe’s lake level of 6225’ or 1897.4 meters, with four major climbs on the century route. I wonder if that’s the most people to ride their first uni-century on the same day?

More details about their rides? Why? What I want to know is “who rides the road?” Why?.. because if you ride the road you can define the route, and thus, the relative effort, or if you like, ‘difficulty’, or if you like achievement.

Sure, the ride you refer to has achievement. So, your Lake Tahoe ride includes “camber, hills and elevation”. In fact, “lots of it”. I assume, no traffic lights, ‘T’ junctions, one-way systems, zebra crossings, built-up urban areas etc etc.

So this is my point…the stamp of achievement in this list is relative. Ranging from, let’s say, ‘easy’ to ‘less easy’ because of the nature of the route, with several other parameters. I would much prefer to ride a beach-path for 100 miles (there and back!) than the ‘dangerous’ routes I have ridden the 100 on public roads. But, for example, I don’t try to make a beach-path the same equivalent as riding the same distance on a public highway.

By that do you mean riding on paved surfaces, or on actual roadways with cars? I suppose we would need to define any labels we use to quantify the rides.

For the record, it actually has a little of all of that, except maybe zebra crossings because I’m not sure. Is that a pedestrian crossing where they have right-of-way? Technically in California they all do, but fortunately most people don’t take advantage. Most of the Tahoe ride is 2-lane highway, with long stretches of non-stop driving. South Lake Tahoe, which is the beginning part of the ride, is urban with a bunch of lights, but we start so early traffic is light.

By contrast, the century route I devised after deciding not to get snow, rain and hail on me at Tahoe, was very flat. I didn’t need it to be so flat; I was trained up for Tahoe, but we have some great bike paths that have few street crossings, so they make for a much more pleasant ride. So in the end, my own century ride was like a pancake, not counting having to get a ride back to the house, set up a different unicycle, and then finish the ride from there…

You’re right that there are a nearly endless number of parameters that can affect the difficulty of a ride, and it might be a mess to try to list them all.

Someday I suppose I will have to do a more “substantial” century out in the real world of traffic and hills. :astonished:

Isn’t doing the century hard enough not to differentiate it even more?
I doubt we can collect enough data from everybody to make it really comparable, so I would rather leave it as is. There is always an option to add some words of comment to your ride.
I would expect most of the rides being done on paved roads or paths anyway.

Congrats, Vookash, well done!

Actually, monocyclism does make some good points here: there are “century rides” and then there are true centuries.

Last year, I chose my birthday to do my own “ride your age” ride through downtown LA traffic, during the evening commute. Here are the details:

42-inch Semcycle, 33mm cranks, with loose seat post, loose right crank, and frozen left bearings.
No dismounts, no breaks, no water.
Both arms tied behind my back.
One leg tied to the frame.
Backwards.
Blindfolded.
Grandmother on back.
Hangover.
Chronic diarrhea.
Finish time: 19 minutes, 42 seconds.

Haha! made my day
