"White, Non-Scuffing Tires"?

I’ve never been to a unicycle contest or convention, but I’ve read that many
require “white”, or “non-scuffing” tires for riding indoors (which makes perfect
sense to me). My question is, can these tires be ridden outdoors and indoors, or
can they be only ridden indoors? Thanks in advance.

Would that Primo 2.1" tire fit in the Osell’s (Paul Wyganowski) frame that was
just reviewed by Andy Cotter?

Well it is a freestyle frame rather than a uni-hoc frame. I was just hoping that
we might get the best of both worlds in that frame.

Oh cool! I’m going to be in the unicycle buying mode for the next year or so and
I’m looking for some quality unis (no more kids stuff hacked together to fit an
adult). His unicycles are going to be at the top of my list right after the
Hunter and/or Telford.

It all depends on the tire that you use. The cheap white tires that you get at
someplace like Target, Walgreens or Kmart will wear out quite quick from outdoor
riding. I remember having to change my tire once every week or two way back when
I used one of those for riding outdoors. They last a couple months indoor.

Now I use the Barefoot tire by Odyssey which will last a lot longer outdoors and
is also good indoors. I get about 9 months of use (mostly indoor, but some
outdoor) out of that tire on my standard unicycle and it doesn’t cost more than
twice as much as the cheap ones. There are other tires that will last longer
too. One popular one is the Peregrine HP-48s tire which has a different tread
that others like better. Both of these tires are also rated for higher pressure.

They can be ridden outdoors also. Hope that you can make it to UNICON X in
Beijing during August 2000. Alberto Ruiz

I doubt that it would. I just measured it and it has a clearance of 2" from
blade to blade (same as Miyata). I know that a 1.95" tire does fit in the
Wyganowski frame.

I dont think a 2.1 Primo “The Wall” would fit in a Wyganowski frame, but the
1.85 fits nicely. This size should be available at www.danscomp.com I think
they even have a picture if you’re interested in checking out the tread. You
can also see this tire and a the Wyganowski Frame in the lone picture at
www.dustin.kelm.com Sorry, i dont have anything new up yet, but we’re
working on it.

Also, I believe the Wyganowski Frame could easily made for 24" or 26" if that is
your prefered wheel size. Dont forget to note that the width probably wouldnt
accommodate anything bigger than a 1.85 tire.

It’s great for freestyle unicycling! Of course it can always be used for
uni-hoc too.

That’s just one of the unicycles that he makes. I think Paul Wyganowski can also
make one that has a rounded crown that would be able to fit a larger tire in it.
He’s made some 28" unicycles that were used on the UAM that have a rounded fork.
There is a picture of one here:
http://gilby.com/pile_of_unicycles_before_starting_the_day.jpg It’s the dark
blue unicycle.

There probably are some other pictures on the UAM website
(http://www.skypoint.com/~cotter/).

I have just measured a fully inflated Primo Wall tyre and it measures 50mm. A
bit too tight for a Miyata, pity.

Have you seen the Primo “The Wall”, it an absolutely amazing tyre, 2.1 with a
pressure rating of 85psi . It is available in black, red, blue and white! It has
such a large air volume it helps with bouncing as well. I use a blue one and
really makes a difference.

Cheers

Sounds like a nice tire! However, I doubt it would fit in a Miyata frame at
that size.

I rode Odyssy Barefeet tires for at least 11 years, and I still think they’re
great tires… this last spring I discovered “The Wall”— I’ll never go back if
I can help it. This tire is excellent indoors and out. The tyre is also
available in a 20x1.85 size. I’ve talked to John at Unicycle.com about carrying
these, but I dont think he has any yet. Until then I believe they can be
acquired for $14.95 at www.danscomp.com If you buy several at time that ends up
being a pretty good price even with shipping. Some of the local shops here sell
them for $20
