Which body armor should I get?

I have a trials uni on the way, but didn’t get knee/shin/elbow pads yet.
Unicycle.com offers armor by Fox, Harbinger and Roach. Roach looks good, but out
of stock. I already have the helmet and gloves (Harbinger). Any advice?

Re: Which body armor should I get?

Put in an order for the Roach leg armor. It may take a little while to get them,
but they’re worth it. It’s the best stuff out there for aggressive unicycling.

In the mean time you will still need something for leg protection. The neoprene
shin pads used by BMXers work well. Find a brand that wraps around and covers
the back of the calf like xtrskn or Hammer. Then add some kneepads that are
comfortable for you and you’re set. The main drawback to the neoprene pads is
that they don’t breathe at all. They are sweaty and hot. Your socks and legs
well be drenched after wearing them. But that’s still better than stitches.

For elbow protection the Fox 911 pads are good. I find them to be more
comfortable than the Roach elbow/arm pads.

RE: Which body armor should I get?

For those in the USA and Canada it looks like AirBomb http://www.airbomb.com/
might have Roach leg armor in stock. At least they have it listed in their
online catalog.

Roach can be a little slow at times. I sent my leg armor up to Roach for some
repair last month. I hope that I get them back before the Spring riding
season starts

Re: Which body armor should I get?

For anyone who has been nailed in the shin by an errant pedal, but is on a
really tight budget, last night I bought a pair of BMX shin/knee guards at
Target. They’re not Roach or anything special and appear to have a little less
coverage than Roach or Fox, but then they are only $17 U.S.! I only have been
able to ride with them for a little bit, but so far I love them and they work
great. The brand is called Reaction, i think, and they are made by Troxel. They
also sell elbow guards that are similar to the Roach kind and those were $20.
Has anyone tried either of this brand before? What are they like?

Re: Which body armor should I get?

Hey Joe,

As John says, definitely get a pair of the shin/knee pads, they make a big
difference and one usually gets hit there often.

As far as the maker, as much as I love Roach, it’s always been difficult to get
my hands on (that, despite the fact that I live in Canada)! As an alternative to
Roach, keep an eye out for Six Six One pads
(http://www.sixsixone.com/661start.html). The padding is very similar, actually
almost identical, to Roach’s.

Happy hopping,

Carl

Re: Which body armor should I get?

Hi All,

There is a new player in the market as well (sorry I do not know their name
yet). I got a call on Tuesday from one my suppliers who I had been talking to
about Roach gear. Because Roach are so poor a supplier, both on reliability
and consistancy, they have commissioned production of a knee/shin guard
similar to the Roach one. A sample should be on it’s way to me in the next few
days. I will give it a test/review, I understand that this will be available
in the USA as well. It’s cost will be considerably less than the Roach, the
quality of the other gear in their shop implies that it will be a high quality
item. I can not wait! I have been trying to get these for the unicycle.com
(UK) for almost 6 months!

Cheers

Roger

Not trying to do you out of any business Roger but, for those interested, I
managed (after a long hunt) to get Roach arm and leg armour in the UK from

Roach in the right hand list of manufacturers. They were both in stock and I had
