Where do you put a computer?

I recently got a Coker (rebuilt from Unicycle.com). I do not have a handle
bar or anything fancy. I want to get computer so I know how far and how
fast I go. Is there any good way to mount the computer to the uni with out
spending a fortune? I have a KH seat if that makes a difference. Thanks for
any advice.

Jim

Jim,
The easiest way to mount a computer is to attach it to the seat tube. Without any handlebar, this is probably your best option. The downside to this location is that you can’t see it while riding. It is nice to have a computer so that you can check your mileage and average and max speeds when off the Coker or when the ride is over. I use a Schwinn 2 button computer (that I purchased at Wal Mart for about $10) on my Coker. The Schwinn computer is one of the few that allows a calibration setting high enough for the 36" wheel.

I have 'cateye’s on my 26" DM and my 36" coker.

The DM has a wireless because I kept tearing the wire with my shoe while riding off-road. Both are mounted to the seat tube. When I had it mounted low enough to read it while riding, during a UPD, it struck a rock or log or something and smashed. Now I have it mounted up high enough that it is protected by the seat, but it is very hard to read while riding.

Max speed is a nice feature to have as well. The off-road has it, but it can not be counted upon. I have ridden down really long steep hills on the coker and really wish I knew what speed I was able to hit.

Average speed and distance are great as training guages.

I have one on the 29er; it faces backwards on the seat tube, although this is probably not ideal because it’s usually covered in so much mud and slime from the wheel that I can’t see it.

Getting the wire secured neatly is essential. Mine came with a few cable ties to secure it to the frame, but not really enough… at the Mountain Mayhem I nearly tore the wire out by thinking it was a bit of stray vegetation when clearing all the mud from around the crown…

Get a wireless computer and mount it on your wrist like a watch. It 'll cost more but it will survive more UPDs than a frame mounted one.

I put mine low on the seat post. I drilled a hole in the seat post and the left frame leg - and ran the wire through. This prevents the wire from snagging on mud going through the frame. The cyclometer has been hit but has not been hurt. I can see it while riding.

P.S. I tried wireless and found it to be less accurate and hard er to fix if there is a problem.

You could also get a wristwatch “style” computer.

“where do you put a computer”?

well there are many options…

#1. a desk
#2. a table
#3. you can mount them to walls
#4. you can even get computers that you can hold or put in you lap.

i hope these suggestions help in your search…

i have created a sin!!!

Not sure that will work, don’t all wireless computers need to be line of sight of the wheel sensor and with in a certain distance.

The computer wouldn’t catch the signals from the wheel mounted on your wrist.

Or is there a more powerfull version that I am unaware off? If so let me know cos I’d want one !!

Scott Wallis has a wireless (the exact same one as I do) and he has it mounted to the lower front of his waist-type camel-back. It works for him, until he stands up on the pedals. He is only slightly less tall than I, but that set-up will not work for me. The line of sight is critical and so is the distance from sender to computer. If there is another computer with longer range, I’d like to try it. Maybe I need to spend a lot more money… I think the wrist watch types may have slightly longer distance, but at a price.
