ive noticed theres alot of older generation(no offense) unicyclers on here and today is my 18 birthday, and with 3 months left of school i was wondering what kinda work some avid unicyclist are into. i would like to work in the whole cycling world but with such diversity theres so many things to do i really have no clue as to what i want to do with my career and future. suggestions?
Do what you like to do.
i like to ride my bicycles and unicycles, now where can i pick up a paycheck? or a home loan? or maybee just a vehicle? “excuse me sir, do you accept 360’s? oh only visa…? maybee next time.”
Work at a bike shop, start your own bike shop.
What else do you like to do?
i love graffiti, drawing, and i do a bit of welding, id like to weld bike frames or uni frames but i dont know where to start getting a job like that.
If there are no local shops around, maybe you should move closer to one. You could go to a technical school for welding and do that professionally. If you’re good, you can make a pretty decent living with it.
To pursue art, you’d need a portfolio though. Have you any experience doing commissions for others? That’d come in useful.
If you don’t want to have a time commitment and are not particular about pay, freelancing is a good option. Starting up might be slow but if your clientele builds up, it can get you decently paid. Provided of course you’re of standard.
Simple answer to your first question is to just do what you enjoy. Try different things to see what you like best. For several years I was convinced I’d love to be a psychologist…but now that I’m taking a high school psych course, I really don’t. But I have picked up a bit of 3d modeling and basic animation as a hobby (although I’m still learning basic stuff), and I absolutely love doing that kinda stuff, so I’m pretty convinced I want to pursue a career in that field now.
Oh and from what I’ve heard, welders make a good amount of money, along with plumbers and electricians and others in those sorts of field, because the people in that industry are slowly becoming a dying breed.
If your passion is cycling (bi- and uni-), and you actually see a career in your future for it, then just go for opening a bike shop, or building bikes/unis.
Pretty much anything you enjoy could be a potential career nowadays (perhaps aside from loafing, although that’s questionable in today’s society).
Because you live in Florida, HVAC mechanic / installer may be a good choice. Definitely have job security. Because you like to weld, brazing should come easy for you.
The nice thing about one of the above trades is, as long as you are a decent worker, you pretty much don’t have to worry about being unemployed.
You could also check out the department of Labor Outlook Handbook. http://www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm
Find work at a bike shop, save up the $$$ until you can open up your own. Then hire people who have the same passion for bikes and unicycles as you do, or are following the same dream as you are. That’s what i would do.
Take care

I’ve been fortunate enough to make a living doing things that I enjoyed; Ventriloquist, actor, comedian, disc jockey, newscaster. All rewarding and interesting jobs, but as it turned out, I much prefer being a business owner-still doing what I love-but thankfully out of the “spotlight!”
thanks for all youre input, ill have to look into oneonones hvac comment because i dont know what hvac is and i enjoyed learning to braze quite a bit,im actually finishing highschool at a vocational tech school taking welding classes so hopefully i can come up with something.
thanks!
oh also i saw a props or roadfools episode with the “dirt brothers” with some brief scenes of there workshop and some bike frame jigs, does anyone know anything about there buisness??
HVAC is Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning
i learned that after a quick google search, and its a terrible idea, i hate that stuff.thanks though!
What do you mean by graffiti? Your can of Krylon is worrying me…
Fck-all, tis a family business.
my rather came to me about half a year ago and said; " Tom, ive been doing Fck-all for the last thirty years and am now ready to retire and ‘relax’ a little. As of the new year it is your turn to take over the business. Son, youv’e got F*ck-all ahead of you"
mmm fond memories
apologies about the language
john foss by graffiti i mean using spraypaint cans /markers/etchers/paint anything to put what i think of as art on things that are visible by public eye.or non visible for personal gratfication, jsut making my mark in my community.
What are you painting on? Your own property or someone else’s?
If you have VICA competitions available, get in there and do your best. Often, local businesses support the contests by providing materials, coming up with tests, and even supplying volunteers to judge! Be sure to show up early so you can chat a bit with the folks helping out; find out where they’re from and what they do. You might end up with a job waiting for you.
Also, get to know your local welding supply people. If you can find a shop with friendly staff, those people are pure gold for tracking down the good welding employers.
