i have some question wheel prices at unicycle.com.
for example, look at the component cost of the
following wheel sets:
$315 profile crank set
$39 alex rim
$55 gazz
$10 dh nokian tube
$12.80 marwi spokes/nipples
$1.20 rim strip and lube
or a total component cost of $433. current price of
the built wheel is $570, for a build cost of $137.
the same set up with the
doublwide comes to $473. built that is $647. build
cost of $174.
or how about:
$42 sun bfrim
$25 suzue hub
$16 bearings
$12.80 spokes/nipples
$1.75 nuts
$1 rim strip
or a total component cost of $98.55. price of the
built wheel is $165.00, for a build cost of $66.45.
and finally, with the sun rhynolite instead of the
bfr, total component cost of $87.55. built cost
$110, so build cost is $22.45.
what does this different cost of a wheel build
represent? they are all done by kovachi.
is $174 typical for a wheel build?
thank you for considering my question,
jose

Okay, at this point I assumed building a wheel took a long time and a
doublewide, maybe because it had more spokes, took even longer.

Now I’m confused. Maybe Profiles are really hard to work with, or you left
out cranks?

So much for that idea.

Labor? Profit? Dunno.

Dunno.

i had heard of this somwhere before but i have never asked or needed to because all of my uni’z ordered,i ordered and built the wheel myself.(except Coker)
in the final price for my KH20 the wheel was Kovachi built, but there was’nt anything like that except the extra $22 bucks for the Alex rim instead of Monty.
the question is definitly a good one, sounds like someone sould e-mail them.
Luckily, I ordered a wheelset last week and got the set for $504. That figures up to a $71 build cost, more than the $40 a local bike shop charges, but it’s probably built better, right? Well . . . right??? The new cost does seem a tad on the high side, where’s the justification for such a sharp increase since the component prices haven’t changed. I guess it does fall entirely on assembly or whatever.
I was noticing something with the Semcycle XL freestyle unis. The normal ones are $259, and with a chrome Rhynolite rim as oppose to the regular rim, the price hops $40. The chrome rim only costs $3 more.
Don’t cry Jose, but you can get the Hub and Crankset direct from Profile for $240 (I’m not sure if that includes bairings?), so you can add at LEAST another $60 to that figure. Say, $234 to $250 wheel build cost if bairings are included. Wow… that’s rich (heh). You could get a plush air sadle with that… or another cycle. Or a hot tub (depending on what end of that deal you’re on ).

This one may actually make sense. If the standard Semcycle XL is factory
made in Taiwan or wherever, this probably includes a machine-built wheel.
These have a much lower cost than hand-built wheels, keeping the price of
the cycle down. If they have to replace the machine-built wheel with a
hand-built one, you have those extra $ for the labor as well as the parts.
“I was burning his dinner when I was 17, and now I’m still burning it when
I’m 52.” – Brett Bymaster’s mom Rita, talking about how she met husband
Frank at age 17, while at Brett’s wedding in July
Unfortunately both of the Semcycles come with hand built wheels from Jon Kovatchi, but had this not been so your theory sounds completely right.
And the price of a hub/crank set direct from Profile is $225. If you want to wait a few extra days they can anodize the hub for you for free.
