when posting, i prefer to use a quote from the post that ‘inspired’ my reply
i dont want to include the entire post, just the relevant bit
including the whole post just makes the thread irritatingly long to scroll thru
(this, i believe, also makes more sense for people who subscribe to the newsgroup as opposed to people who use the web-forum)
since i dont selectively quote in order to change the meaning or the intention of the original post but i have noticed a couple of posters who will include the word ‘<snip>’ to indicate where they cut the original post, i got to wondering,
I cut out parts much in the same way I think AccordNSX does. I don’t know if there necessarily is an ‘accepted’ way, everyone has their own ways of doing things.
quoting sometimes isn’t necessary if it is obvious what you are replying to.
but it’s nice to indicate in some way (dots or <snip>) that you have taken bits of someones post instead of the whole thing. but maybe that isn’t necessary because i think everyone assumes it.
Good one Checkernut! A looser what? Your spelling is a bit loose. I don’t think there is too much of a strict protocol when quoting, as long as some of the original message is conveyed. If you were to change their words that might be naughty, but it probably would not matter too much. Just quote whatever makes you happy, and hope that it makes other people happy too.
it may seem obvious on the web-site when u have the whole thread in front of u
it may seem less obvious to news-group people who simply receive an email of a new post
without context, that can be a bit confusing
(but that only applies to R.S.U. and not just conversation, right?)
If all of the replies stay closely together as to subject, a quote is often not necessary even on the newsgroup. Otherwise I will quote like GILD mentioned in his first post.
Newsgroup people don’t get emails of a new post. You are confused with people on the mailing list. A dying race if you ask me. On the newsgroup, posts and replies are grouped together so it’s not as bad as you think. (But for mailing list subcribers it is, I think.)
Just Conversation doesn’t exist as a newsgroup or as a mailing list, so you’re right there.
