Are you asking the newsgroup? Mango answered that one.

Or are you asking what server Gilby uses? There are several names that
look like server names in the header of the messages from
unicyclist.com as they appear on usenet. It used to be the server of
the university that Gilby was in. Now, I don’t know, ask Gilby if that
is what you want to know. I don’t think he has his own news server
(like you implied with that name news.unicyclist.com).

my bad, i just meant the new group, not the newsgroup server.

thanks for the clarification

(methinks the newsgroup will be more work-friendly :slight_smile: )

Meaning the ng name, rec.sport.unicycling.

With extensive discussion on the mailing list beforehand, as I recall.
There are links to the archives here:
<URL:http://www.unicycling.org/discuss/>
if you really, really want to look at those discussions.

I remember following the discussions in 1994 and 95, I got the
impression the matter had been discussed a fair bit before I joined the
list as well.

The RFD (Request For Discussion) on newsgroup creation was posted on 23
March 1995:
<URL:http://tinyurl.com/2opz2>

It was anticipated that people would argue for the group to be placed in
the alt. hierarchy, but a lot of people on the mailing list felt
strongly that this shouldn’t happen. Part of the reason for the
newsgroup was to help unicycling become more mainstream. It was felt
that people coming to unicycling for the first time would take a rec.
group more seriously than an alt. group.

rec.sport was felt to be more appropriate than rec.arts. Most
non-unicyclists would regard unicycling more as an art than a sport, but
I think most people here would feel differently. Also, there was a lot
of discussion at the time about a long term goal of seeing unicycling as
an olympic sport. So the group had to go in the rec.sport hierarchy.

You can probably guess where the unicycling part of the name came from :wink:

Thanks Danny, although my question was in jest (I figured it was r.s.u because the forum was r.s.u) your reply was very informative, and the heirachial format of the newsgroups was quite interesting

Thanks!

The newsgroup predates the forum by many years, the forum was launched
only in March 2001. So the naming after was the other way round. But
you understood that already.

RSU = recreation.sport.unicycling

No, it’s rec.sport.unicycling. If you mean that rec stands for
recreation you’re right but the abbreviation as opposed to the full
word is in the name of the newsgroup (hierarchy).
