Just a point I feel the need to make. That was a steep but relatively short hill and it was the only part I walked all day. Even as I started up the hill I instantly knew I could not do it. My legs already had the feel of lactic acid build up. Nonetheless I felt bad enough about walking this small part that I added an extra 400m to the end of my route just to be certain that I had cycled a full 100km that day. As it happens this was not required because I later discovered that the Strava app had some autopause issues and had removed some of my ride and I was easily over 100km anyway. ![]()
That hill did still weigh on my mind though. Part of the reason for my ride the next day was to ride up “Grefsenkollen”, a well known (in Oslo at least) nearby hill that I frequently cycle up. I wanted to prove to myself that I could still do it, even after a long cycle the day before. Then when I got to the top of it, I looked out across the horizon and saw another hill far away across Oslo, “Holmenkollen” (which has a famous ski jump) and thought to myself… maybe I should cycle over to that as well! And thus started my 42km tour around Oslo.
I actually sent pictures from the peaks of both to @UniMyra to wipe the smile off his face that I witnessed when I failed the hill the day before. ![]()

Hills aside, as for the “beer”. I wanted that beer. The spot we stopped at is a place @UniMyra and I have enjoyed sitting at before after long rides and it would have been amazing. But… I was really broken by that stage and I still had a lot of uphill to go to get home in those last 10km. If I had a beer at that stage I am afraid I might have collapsed in a nearby park and given up on my 100km despite being so close to the end. Thus I made my only sensible (but boring) choice of the day and held off.
P.S. After I got home, had a shower and prepared something to eat, I did also have a beer to celebrate but I doubt it tasted as good as it would have done sitting next to my friend in the sun! Oh well… we’ll have a beer at that place one day in the future @UniMyra, that is a promise!
