So I am wondering, Why is a word a bad word?
I took this off of Vova Galchenko’s blog. It is very interesting. What do you all think about it?
I must say though, I do agree, all though I don’t swear because I am not sure what my mom would say about it and because I never really did swear, so I would like sound akward to me.
There seem to be some religous people on here, does anybody have any bible refences about this?
I submit that some of the worst offenders are words or phrases like “Monday morning” or “So you’re turning 40!” or maybe “Honey, does this dress make me look fat?” What can be worse than that?
I have to admit, I occasionaly swear, but some people, whose every second word (or sometimes it seems like it) is a swear word just come across as uneducated, rude people. Maybe I should’t make those assumptions, but I do. So to me, swearing doesnt offend me, but it does give me a bad first, second, or third, impression of a person. There are so many ways to discribe anger, frustration, or pain which will probably actually get across your point clearly.
umm, the bible says … ephesians 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
also it says do not use god’s name in vain
thats a commandment
mmm. My understanding here (and i could be wrong and this is just My understanding) is that though the comandments are important there are two more important than the others, Love the lord your god with all your heart… and love thy neighbour
Also when you say do not use gods name in vain, who’s god are you talking about (please take no offence from this as i am meaning none)
Your god? My god? Does each individual not have a different perspective and understanding of there own ‘god’?
Also in todays times swearing has lost a lot of its ‘hurtfull’ meanings, yes it can be used in very hurtful ways but it is also used in common conversation, just think back to ages ago when words used common now were concidered swear words and very frowned upon
Well I dont know if that makes any sense
(i hope no one takes offence from this:) )
Well said indeed. The swear word does have a use in language, almost invariably when other factors reach an extreme. Its commonplace usage to replace more or less any adjective, or to emphasize more or less anything, devalues it completely. Those who pepper every sentence in this way have lost the means to shock. A swear word from one who swears very very rarely can still make me look round in surprise. Its all about effective communication.
But people who do swear constantly, in the company of others who do the same, are communicating effectively with their peers. They probably filter out all the swear words and hardly notice them at all.
I am not usually offended by swearing unless the intent was to offend, but I would prefer people not to swear in my company. These days that is probably asking far too much. Only once has swearing really amused me, a guy was asked what was wrong with his printer.
" The f…ing f…ers f…d." was the highly diagnostic reply.
I am just going to add that a lot of swear words are related to sexual violence/acts - why would you want to go about saying these things. Rather than why not use swear works, more likely, why use swear words.
I only really swear when…
a) I’m in pain (I tend to swear a lot when learning something on the uni)
b) I’m around people who swear a good amount (for example, when I’m gaming with a bunch of other people who swear when they get fragged or something, I tend to do it more; not in any effort to fit in, just subconsciously)
There are some extreme situations where emotions can run high and then swear words just seem to fit the situation better, because of their extreme connotations in general society. They do have a special, important place in society, because face it, a simple “darnit” doesn’t always convey the right emotions.
Unfortunately, like Naomi mentioned, people that swear every few words (not mentioning any races here) dilute the real meaning of the swear words, which isn’t so bad just because of the amount of profanity they use, but because they’re using these words that have a special place in human language so much that they become just normal words…and then there’s nothing else left as a backup to use when emotions do end up running high, so they’re SoL.
The reason to not use profanity ahs nothing to do with religion, my personal view on profanity and it’s use comes from the devout athiest Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. As quoted from his novel Slapstick: Or Lonsome No More!
“…profanity and obscenity entitle people who don’t want unpleasant information to close their ears and eyes to you.”
He stated the same thign at another point with better wording, but I can’t find it and i hate for a quote to not be exact.
I was brought up to never swear in front of my parents. I never have and probably never will. I’m not that big on swearing. Indeed, apart from the time I was bitten on the arse by a dog last week, I can’t remember the last time I swore out loud in public.
By the way, the arse is healing nicely, thank you.
(Does ‘arse’ count as a swear word?)
