Does the “RPT” in your username stand for “Registered Piano Technician”. In the piano tuning/repair and restoration business, “RPT” is the standard acronym.
So MuniAddict, were you a Registered Piano Technician? You didn’t say what you did before you were free as a bird. I hope to be free as a bird in 2 years. Gotta do the 2 more years!
I started out tuning pianos for Steinway back in 2000, then started my own business a couple years later. I love the work and have tuned, repaired and restored just about every type and brand there is. I’ve been fortunate enough to have had a very successful 11 years in the business, and now I have the luxury to pick and choose the jobs I want.
But there have always been certain pianos I will not work on; “Squares”, “bird cages” and “cut downs”; the latter having the notorious mirror at the top. This was a common practice way back in the 40’s and 50’s, where the really old, tall uprights were “cut down” (just the top part of the case) and a mirror was attached in it’s place. This had the effect of making the tall pianos appear shorter, since at that time, shorter pianos were in vogue. This practice is severely frowned upon in the piano tuning community, as it devalues the piano, and also makes it much more difficult to tune and service.
My favorite pianos: Yamaha, Kawai, Steinway, Fazioli, Schiller
