What do unicyclists want from a geared hub?

Yet another guni thread that went down the same rabbit hole, you’d think it’d get crowded down there…

I don’t get it.

Yeah you do, you just can’t see it so well because you’re down in the hole with the rest of us

Those clever guys at Schlumpf have a geared down drive now:

They also have alternative geared up drives.

I assume there is some reason we cannot just mount these in our unicycles?

They don’t have unicycle bearings, or spoke holes.

Of course that is true, but I wonder if they could be adapted. Does anyone know if they are freewheeling hubs, which would make them useless for unicycles? If not, one might be able to build a wheel that engages the drive ring. Then Nurse Ben would have his down-shifting hub and stop bugging us about it.

This supplier stocks some replacement parts for Schlumpf hubs that might be of interest:

Actualy I have heard of that saying plenty, theres no harm in dreaming

Schlumpf mountain-drive hub down gear ratio is only 2.5:1 (36" = 14.4"), which is very very short ratio, not fine for a unicycle for sure

…Florian has sold the rights to his mountain drive system and will not be in charge of producing them in the near future- I doubt the new owners would have an interest in modifying that down gearing system for unicycles.

I’ve gotten so used to and comfortable with traditional foot shifting, and for me, I think it’s the most efficient and direct way to shift. A hand shifter of some kind might be nice, but it would also add more complexity and moving parts, leading to a greater risk of shifting “glitches” or failure. The internal geared uni hub is still relatively new, and I’ve no doubt that there will be further improvements and innovations as time goes on, but for now I’m very happy with the hub in its current form.
