I feel that in the next few years a demand for jobs will return. The question what will they be ? I never went to college and feel this might be a good time to take night and online classes to prepare for a better career than what I have.I have always been hands on and love science,so Im thinking something in applied science. Any suggestions ?
Your question is far too broad for the answer to do you any service. To wit: in my region, the demand for jobs has never left. If you were here, you’d just have to take one look in the paper to realize, with a degree in math, computer science, chemistry or biology, you’d already have a job (unless you worked for Yahoo ).
You should narrow your search… most importantly, what would make you happy? You could go to school for a nursing degree (which is in high demand everywhere) but find that you’re unhappy dealing with sick people, even though you’d never be unemployed.
Also, where would you like to live? You could work on oil rigs in Alaska and never be unemployed, but you might be miserable because of the weather and such.
There will always be jobs for skilled laborers and science majors. The question should be, what would make you happier?
I think you are not looking very hard at the future Maestro. Jobs in the oil industry are not the future. That is a mistake people have been making lately but the future holds sustainable perpetual renewable power, so there is no point in aspiring to become part of the poison of the earth. Skilled labourers are what the world needs- skilled people with people skills. The money jobs are on the way out- because the paper money is a fake economy anyway. Don’t aspire to be an advertiser or a banker - try and get useful skills, and like maestro said, most importantly find something that you can be happy doing.
Something(which I here embellish) a guy told me recently is this: don’t concern yourself too much with how much you will enjoy your career. You have time to do things you really enjoy. If you get a job that you enjoy, great. Just make sure that whatever job you get, you have time for family, etc.
Blend/mix work with fun. yes???
Healthcare will be here for a long time. And there are many different careers inside of that large area.
And I think that people are quite lucky when they work a job that they actually enjoy. Me? I have my days, but in the end, I’m just a wage slave.
energy is going to be the next big thing. Imagine if we could have 100% renewable energy? That will change everything
According to a recent article, jobs for the immediate future are Health Care (“particularly in areas of nursing, pharmacy and physical therapy, where worker shortages have been persistent.”), Corrections, and Hi-Tech.
We’re really not on anybody’s radar but good insurance adjusters are always needed too (for once I’m not joking).
the future is not any more what it used to be …
when I was a student in architecture we all thought the next big thing will be energy saving houses with solar panels and all that stuff… 40 years later the same dream is resurfacing … I just hope this time people will listen!
now for the initial question: it seems that the initiator thinks that having technical knowledge will land him a job: may be but he must be aware that in a class society “techies” are low caste (just above manual labourer).
if he wants to have a high caste status of predator he does not need technical knowledge but should be a fearless and remorseless windbag!
Im working in the wine business but am a Chef by trade so I always have something to fall back on.
If I get fed up w/ my job Ill just go cut Broccoli somewhere, literally
Look for jobs that REQUIRE face to face interaction, that way they cannot be outsourced. If your job is to do research, and then tell someone what you’ve discovered, they can outsource your job. If your job is performing surgury, they cannot. Also, you could look for jobs that are less about doing the same thing everyday, and more about solving problems on a consulting basis. While consultant jobs can be outsourced, if you are really good at it, and they only have to pay you once in a while when they require you (instead of every month) they are less likely to do so. The jobs of the Future will (I think) be less about making thinks and doing things, and more about finding new ways to do and make things; less about action, more about creativity and thought.
The world needs more high school math teachers.
That wasn’t what I was claiming, but to play devil’s advocate, as long as the US Armed Forces has petroleum-fueled vehicles, there will be jobs in the oil industry.
One sure-fire way to ensure employment is to see what the government is spending money on, and follow the money.
Excuse me, your bias is sticking out.

Well I called my college and set up a time to talk with the career consulere for next week. If I qualify for aid then I might give it a go. I’m a motorcycle mechanic and have worked on the pro racing circuit for almost six years. I gave it up alittle over a year ago to be at home with my young children. On race teams your always on the move and I spent 3-5 months out in So cal away from my family each year,it was very fun but not a family guy type of job.I loved science in high school and was very good at it so I’m thinking something in that kind of work but I dont have a clue what kind of jobs are out their. Sorry for being so general but I have realy no clue.I was thinking this post might bring up some fun and up coming jobs that I might be intrested in to make a career out of.
Thanks for the susgestions, keep them coming !
P.S. I now work at a dealership but its low pay no insurance and no retirement.
With the Obama as Prez and the government imposing economic destruction, the last jobs that will be available are government jobs. No skills needed, just get in early… and throw any morals you might have had out the door.
Oil is not going away anytime soon, but it will start to decline as other forms of energy become as easy and/or cheap to produce.
But so far I haven’t heard any discussion on replacement fuels for jets…
OH RLY?
What’s wrong with public service?
Are you saying the guy that pulls weeds around the state building has no morals?
What about the people that maintain the state auto pools? Or the IT staff for the various gov’t offices?
What do morals have to do with any of it?
Speaking as someone who works designing powertrain for future vehicles, unfortunately you’re right. I can’t see oil really going anywhere for atleast 20 years. The genreal focus seems to be on energy transmission (electric cars, hydrogen fuel cells) etc. rather than the actual source of energy, which is the really tricky bit. Whe you can’t just dig it out of the ground any more things become very tricky.
