Welcome Dustin Kelm

Dustin,
Great to see you posting here. I had always wondered why the other names in unicycling were here, but you were always missing. Welcome. Hope to hear your input on everything. If I am not mistaken, you are mainly a freestyle rider, right? Do you do any other stuff alot, like muni or trials? Maybe even get some speed on a coker? Tell us a bit about yourself.

Thanks for the welcome David,
Although, I think a welcome back may be more appropriate. I have posted,
but not recently and I’m likely to disappear again for awhile when things
get busy. I try to monitor the list when I can.

I guess I’m primarily a freestyle rider but I got kind of burned out on that
by the time UNICON IV was done. Lately my interests have been trials
(check out the frames that Dan Heaton and I use www.dustin.kelm.com/trials)
and MUni. I wish I could say that I do it all a lot, but I’ve been spending
a lot of my time at the desk and most of the riding I do is when I’m
performing. I think things are starting to level out with the business end
of things so I may soon be able to do the kind of riding I’d like.

I like speed, but don’t own a Coker yet. If I had the yen I’d build a big
wheel uni with a real rim and tire.

My Equipment:
-2 Freestyle uni’s built by Paul Wyganowski. One of them is the first
unicycle that Paul ever built.
-Trials uni. Frame by Paul W. Wheel by Monty.
-Pashley MUni. (a tank) 26x2.6 Kenda Tire. 170 Kooka cranks that I have yet
to bend. And a Sun BFR built by Kovachi that I tacoed on an 8ft drop in
Honduras last summer. Rebuilt by Paul W. and it’s survived a lot of drops
off stages.
-20 inch Miyata deluxe.
-24 inch Miyata deluxe. (on which I won my first MUni race in 98)
-24 inch Ultimate wheel. Built by the Legendary Loony Len Salverda. This is
made out of skinny wheelchair wheel. (the wheel is skinny, not the
wheelchair)
-Schwinn 6ft. Status…retired. The frame is cracked below cranks and I
don’t want to ruin the original look with a weld job. Now it’s just part of
the collection.
-Semcycle 6ft with modifications by Paul W.
-Tom Miller 10ft. with modifications by Paul W.
-Semcycle Double Wheel. On permanent loan courtesy of Juggle master Jay
Gilligan. (www.jugglingstar.com)
-Enough parts to make a couple more.
-And yet another that is in the process of being constructed by Paul W.
-One old van, license Minnesota license plate UNICYCL

Is this enough info for ya? Anything else you would like to know?
And for you NYrs, I’ll be performing in Garden City on May 18. I’ll
probably have some time on Sunday as my flight home doesn’t leave until 7p.
Any suggestions as to where I should ride?

later,
Dustin Kelm

Re: RE: Welcome Dustin Kelm

WOW. Great to hear you are going to be performing 'round here. Where will the performance be? How can I get tickets? What time does it start? Please let us know.

As for the where should I ride question, the answer to that is an easy one… With the New York Unatics. I will give Dave Stone a call later tonight, and see if we could get a special meet that day. The normal meet is the same saturday you are doing your show, but I would really like to get a chance to ride with you. I am willing to travel, so lets see if we could get something set up while you are here.
You can e-mail me at JFatSmokes@nyc.rr.com or catch me on AOL Instant Messenger under the screen name JFatSmokes.

Here is a message I received from Dave Stone (cofounder of the Unatics):
I was actually thinking about adding the 19th for some reason, even before this news of Dustin’s impending visit. So maybe we can add the date, and it would be fun, too, cuz we’ll still have uni.5! If Dustin can make it, then I’ll ask the wife if she thinks it’s ok.
