web hosting

anybody know where i can get hosting like total unis site with just his name and then .com also if he got it for free or not because im looking to make my site better with more options and stuff also gilby do you host web pages? www.sunic.s5.com

you could try to ask total uni on his site

To get a dot com domain, you’re going to have to pay for it, or it may come free with a hosting package. You can get a domain for $6.49 at: https://domains.ev1servers.net/cgi-bin/reg_system.cgi

This is a Tucows OpenSRS reseller, so it’s a good domain registrar.

Yes, you could probably talk me into hosting a unicycle related site for free, though I currently don’t have the best setup yet to do stuff such as set up email accounts and whatever. The new server is still being configured and all the unicycle stuff is going to be consolidated onto that.

If you need hosting, Jess mentioned Dreamhost the other day which he is using for his non-uni sites: http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37849

So if you want all the hosting bells and whistles, go there. I’ve heard good things about them, but have no experience with them.

I hope to have the unicyclist.com webspace set up again for new members and am planning to make a content management system (CMS) available, the same CMS that I’ll have for unicyclist.com.

"Ipowerweb.com

it was 95 bucks with free domain name, 2gb space, 50gb bandwith, gallery, fourm, pay pal shoping cart."

So obviously his dad just threw 100 bucks at the kid… spoiled.

I’m having trouble with my wife’s art website at www.portland.co.uk. It used to be fantastic because, although small, it had all the features I was looking for and was FREE. Now the site can’t be accesssed. I can log onto it and get the statistics but the site is inaccessible. Portland says that it has been having trouble with accounts since mid January and is working on them.

I’m looking for a new host.

Important features:
FTP access (MUST have)
No ads
No pop-ups
A domain you can at least"partially" name.

Hers is

http://karen-cross-art.port5.com

where Portland makes its pitch by adding itself to her domain name. It gave you 15mB of space and 100mB/month bandwidth for free. Anybody seen anything similar, cheaper, better, or for not too much dough?

Thanks.

Actually what you have is a sub-domain of port5. Sounds like it was not a bad deal. Except for the part about getting what you pay for. General rule: as long as it’s free, it will never be safe from changes or unfixed problems (such as bankruptcy) that are beyond your control. For that reason I was never interested in free internet services.

Though I don’t have any recommendations for budget solutions, my advice is to definitely pay for something. You’ll have a lot more control and “safety” that way. Of course, wherever you get hosted, always assume the data could be lost and keep backups yourself.

Unicycling.com is hosted at www.lunarpages.com

Finding a webhost can be very difficult at best.

These days, it is easy to set up a web hosting company due to the resources that are available. Due to this, there are many companies that seem to compete with each other and the prices can fluxuate.

Alot of cases, a web hosting company that is advertising can turn out to be simply a reseller that owns an account with a much larger company.

With so many different resources available for free on the internet, alot of hosts will offer similar services. The only big difference is the price, which often times can be so low that it seems unrealistic.

Where do you look for a good company?

Many people say google is your friend. That it is.

There are alot of forums out there that monitor the webhosting industry and act as consumer forums. These are awsome resources for finding out information on what is available.

A good resource that I use alot is webhostingtalk.com

A lot of special offers are posted here and searching on this website will provide alot of answers to questions related to hosting, etc.

Hope this helps.

That was good advice, but I offer a warning on the above. When the prices get down to the unrealistic levels, there is definitely something being given up. That’s service. Service which includes tech support, or even getting back to you at all in a reasonable amount of time. Definitely check the hosting comparison sites to see which ones get the better ratings.

One of the things I like about Lunarpages is the extensive online instructions they have, and the control panel software that gives you lots of control over your site without having to get someone to do things for you. I’m sure other hosting companies offer similar products and services.

Another thing I will mention is domain name ownership. Be very, very wary of companies that will register your domain for you. Read the fine print. Many companies will hold your domain hostage. You think you bought it, but actually they bought it for you. When you later decide to move to a different hosting company, the “bad” registrars won’t let you take your domain with you. You find out you don’t actually own it; they do.

I consider myself lucky I registered Unicycling.com through Network Solutions, which is a full-service domain registering company (they used to be the only one). I know I own it. A business group my wife is a member of got theirs as part of a hosting deal. When they went to move their site, the company gave them endless hassles and they eventually had to give up the domain. I still get stupid emails because I’m still listed as the technical contact for that domain.
