We won something again!

check it out

it was exceptionally sweet to beat New Zealand in the finals
it was even sweeter to see Australia and England play in the 3rd place play-offs

a bit of much needed good Rugby Union news 'cause boris knows, our senior sides really suck

Re: We won something again!

Dave,

Great name for a team, the Baby Boks. I can just picture this group of sweaty, dirty brutes high-fiving and declaring “Go, Baby Boks!”

By the way, I once heard a statement on the difference between soccer and rugby. Rugby is a brute’s sport played by gentlemen and soccer is a gentlemen’s sport played by brutes.

I use to play intermural Rugby in high school. Quite the game.

Bruce

the south african national rugby team’s been known as the Springboks since 1904 when the first team toured to England
their captain, Paul Roos (the guy my highschool was named after), suggested the name since they took some stuffed Springbok heads with them as trophies for any team that could beat them
the name Springbok eventually spread to other sporting codes as well and became a generic name for a national side
this changed somewhat during the 1990’s with the restructuring of sport in south africa
some codes felt that the name had too much baggage and our cricket team are now known as the Proteas

during the nation-building Rugby World Cup of 1995, the team became known as Ama-Bokko-Bokko
this was basically a translation into a more vernacular slang
i believe it’s essentially a Zulu structure that was applied

{shortly after that, a south african team went off to the paralympic games and called themselves Ama-Krokko-Krokko
this is really funny and disarming if u know that a ‘krok’ is an afrkaans slang word for a ‘jaloppy’, basically a car that’s being held together by spit and hope
the ‘disabled’ athletes decided to play to their strenghts and gave themselves that name}

the ‘baby boks’ got their nickname during the world cup campaign they won 3 years ago

south african sports team names is a fun field to mess around in

Grrrrr…we’ll get you next time dont you worry:p

Congratualtions.

yeah, given the Rathbone example, more than half of those guys will probably be playing for u in a couple of years anyway

Really get a kick out of your kiwi!
