At Family Camp in the U.P., we would spend time in the craft cabin making walking sticks out of maple saplings. Maple saplings break throught the soil, make an immediate horizontal for about four inches, then climb vertical again. We would cut them off at the soil, turn them over and have a natural handle on the top of our walking stick or cane.

Our decorations included some carving, torching spots into the shaft, and other fancy things. The wood usually finished out nicely and they turned out to be very fine canes. We have one in the closet that Mary’s father used (he was disabled) for years and years.

sounds cool. i made a cane for my grandpa out of a walnut branch. i carved it and polished it up real nice. i would post a pic but i dont have a digital camera yet:(
