Virus

Ive been absent from the list for a while (as Im sure you could tell :^) )
because I got a trojan virus from one of the posts on the list. Im not blaming
anyone because im told it mails itself to people whithout you knowing when you
log on to the net. It arrives in a blank Email with an attatched pif file which
then starts messing around with your files and trys to download plugins and
alsorts when you log on to the net.

Its quite a new virus called mtx_.exe or matrix. You can get more info from the
McAffee web site or AVS but if your PCs been doing wierd stuff recently (eg
trying to log itself onto the net) i suggest looking for a file like
“jimi_hendrix.mp3.pif” or “blink_182.mp3.pif” or similar (it picks one at random
from an extensive list but look for the pif, exe, or scr double tag thingy).

Hope it ain’t got you too.

Tom

PS im not certain but I think it might have been john childs who sent it to me
so you might want to check for it john.

Re: Virus

Bummer about the virus. Some of them can be a pain to remove and the ones that
corrupt or delete files are evil.

My systems are clean. The virus did not come from me.

In addition to the standard anti virus products the ZoneAlarm firewall by Zone
Labs is a good line of defense. In addition to basic firewall functions it
monitors applications on your machine that try to access the net so it will
catch trojans that try to phone home or open a backdoor. And they have a free
version for personal use. http://www.zonelabs.com/

Or you can run Linux or FreeBSD. Pretty virus resistant.
