Good video, and I really like the song.

I’ve wanted to use African music for awhile. Its from my wife’s CD, which we listened to while driving to Oregon.
This weekend, we’re going to an Aids benefit for Kenya. So it was the right time.

The video mixes 2 opposite styles: Muni, which we prefer to do during wet season, and Freestyle, which we do in the summer.

Jeanine, our visitor from Switzerland, balancing unicycle on chin.
James is the expert, but Jeanine was very detemined, and photogenic.

vanuni ride statistics
I’ve been putting our vanuni rides into a spreadsheet. I dont know why, but heres a pie chart

Very enjoyable video! I really liked this one a lot, nice MUni, some spectacular falls (especially the one where the guy got propelled down into that little gully…hopefully no one was hurt), and some really fun segments (like where the biker chose the easy route and was followed up by a uni tearing up the trail for all it was worth). It makes me want to go out and ride…which I think I’ll go do now.

Re Jon falls
Thanks! 2 weeks ago when we did the muni ride, I held back doing the video.
I knew I had to do it, cuz vanuni folks wanted to see that scene of Jon falling down the gully.
That area is cursed… we always have a nasty fall. Its steep and the trail/gravel is loose.
When I make a video, the one thing I edit out is lame falls. But spectacular falls are good entertainment

Re bikes
Its interesting to see how bike take the same muni challenges.
Mostly, they take the easy way out, and are awe inspired by unicylists.
Occasionally we catch a unicylists on 2 wheels, and have to pull him over.

This weekend, we’re going to CBC. Arguably the best muni trail on earth.
Come join us. Google trail map of CBC

I group shot of vanuni. From left to right

Jon - moved to Vancouver from Toronto. (presumably for better muni) Has ridden with famous people. Nice fall into gully. I enjoy riding with Jon because we’re about the same level. He helped Jeanine and I with crank grabs.

Jeanine - visiting from Switzerland. star of the video, Jeanine is learning skills at a blistering pace, and did some photogenic moves for the video.

James - our industrious leader. James is soft spoken, but really the heart of vanuni and generally our most skilled rider. In this video he does a unispin on a 29" and some coasting.

AnSo - visiting from France. The “nuts” frame is a “callback” to DeepCove, where Tynan brought carrots.

Nick - first time out this year. We’re at 16 riders this year.

Matt - my son, extreme bicyclist. He filmed a bit too. Kids make for some fun outtakes and film silly stuff.

Frank - hey, what am I doing in a photo?! I had several personal achievements - crank grab, wheel hop, wheel walk with garbage can

Tynan - formerly a californian, but prior convictions in canada. Normally, he wins for most spectacular fall. I liked his wheel walking on the 29". Thanks for tips on wheel hopping.

Ryan - can no longer claim to be shortest or youngest. maybe best. Ryan blows away the bicycles in the muni section.

vanuni muni rides average 5.8 riders.

I liked the video and music a lot. And the pie chart! Yeah, MUni the most.

The muni crash with Jon was pretty spectacular. I didn’t film it well, so you have to look closely. Below are 3 frames… note the last one is 2 feet in the air as he goes head first into the bushes.

You guys sure like muni footage! SFU is the easiest of muni, does not have interesting bridges like Fromme or CBC, and we didnt do anything unique. As a ride, the whole thing is ridable, so I didnt film as much either.

Another good one!!!

Showed the dificulty of the trails better than possibly any of your vids :astonished:

Is Jeanine’s personality that infectious off camera too? :stuck_out_tongue:

Since I like Muni the best, the best video of your club is two of exclusively Ryan
“Three days in Sechelt” and “The Extreme”
Maybee some of these lines are bigger and much less technical than what you guys normally do on your club rides.:o

In those he does begger stuff and more smoothly than anytining I’ve seen James do in the other vids.

I notice most of you don’t use a break. Just about anyone I see ride terrain like that w/ that profficiency has one. Is it the cost, more challenge, or just havent gotten arround to it?

You should note that there are many more vids at vanuni.com and put it in your sig.

Ryan is by far the 2nd most skilled rider, that I know of, in our area (the best being Kris, but he’s usually too busy to make weekend rides). He has so much flow and tries lines that we often don’t even see. He’s really good at trying things repeatedly until he lands them, after all unicycling is 90% determination… plus he has great speed, balance and on top of it all is a really nice guy

Youtube version

Some vanuni folks complained the video didn’t download/play smoothly. One reason is that I’m using a bit higher datarate, because youtube and google will transcode it anyway, so I want the ‘source’ to be high quality.

Thanks… I try to bring that out, because film has a tendency to make things look flat/easy. But my personal favorite remains Salvation - the section where Jamey does a skinny.

Yes; She’s a disease.
But the whole group is great. Without exception, none of them are evil

Oh sure, pick something Ryan edited! hmph
But ya, that was great. We’re all talking about doing a vanuni weekend at Sechelt since he posted those great videos.
And as James points out, Ryan is next to Kris in muni.

Our muni is more like trials.
We talk about it now and then. There are really only a few times in serious muni where a brake would help. For example a long steep slippery ramp.
The rest of the time, its just extra weight and a liability… something that will break. (no pun intended)

Its a deep dark secret.

James is our 2nd most modest rider. Ryan may wear yellow and film spectacularly, but James is the epitome of unicycling.

Here’s Ryan with mud on his face

IMG_6983.jpg

I rewatched those vids and the space around the ramps and such is much more open than the terrain usually in your videos. Maybee it is easier to get more impressive camera angles this way. The added space may also make the line a bit easier

I was only including people who are regularly in your videos. If I were only judging by what I’ve seen Kris do in your guys’ vids I would say there are several who are better than him. That of course is not the case. Kris ROCKS!!!

Another amazing rider who was in one of your videos is Jeff Groves. He made several attempts at pedal grabing a round rail, but couldn’t get up to tire on his muni. Kris did this in Defect on a trials (easier), and a skinnier rail (harder to ride, but easier to pedal grab).
