Ben
windows media player.
I like VirtualDub - http://www.virtualdub.com/ - for frame by frame analysis of videos and stuff like that. Otherwise I use Windown Media Player and IrfanView.
Andrew
quick time, windows media and real one. some movies require a divx codec to play it.
MEIDIA PLAYER!!!
o right i ment to say could you post links to there sites i know most of them but i don’t know there site namess!!!
ben
Hi Ben,
if you have a particular vid that wont play send us a link to it & I will see what I have that will play it.
other than that:
Windows Media Player (should be on windows machines as default but apply any updates from
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
for best results.
Real One plays lots of stuff quite well, there is a link to the free version from here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/audiohelp_install.shtml
(real.com seems to be down at the moment.)
The free version of QuickTime can be downloaded from here:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
Videos that use DivX will need you to have a DivX codec to play them, I think my setup relies on a free version of this product:
When I installed it the player was installed plus the codecs for my other players, but the version was a free version I think, not this ad-supported version. I guess you will have to try it to find out.
WinAmp also plays vids but it is not so good as the others IMHO
Hope this helps,

You should not install older versions of the Real Media player from Real Networks. Older versions have security holes that can allow a bad guy to take over your computer.
The Real Player 10 fixes those security holes. Older versions of the Real Player software were not patched so they are all still vulnerable. It is highly recommended that everyone upgrade to Real Player 10.
Real Player 10 is much better than previous versions. I would dread installing products from Real Networks because they installed extra stuff that was always running on the computer. I’d have to go in the registry and disable things to get it to stop being a bad house guest. Real Player 10 plays nice and is a good house guest. You can go to Tools >> Preferences and configure the Message Center so that it doesn’t run all the time. Real is no longer evil. They even cleaned up their web pages so that it is easier to find the download link for the free version of the player.
Here’s some news articles about the security holes in the older versions of Real Player: News.com article, Slashdot article
Go to the Real Player download page. In the lower right corner is a link to the FREE version of the Real Player.
DivX Networks doesn’t make the download for the free version of the DivX codec the most obvious download on the page. It’s there, and has the text “Standard DivX Codec(FREE)”. The free version will play all DivX encoded videos. You only need to use the DivX Pro (either the $19.99 version or the ad supported version) if you want to encode your own videos.
JC,
Thanks for the heads up on real player. I never liked the real network. Do you think they really did clean up? I think if I get the palm pilot I’ve been eyeing, I have to put their player on it to play mp3s.
Daniel
It looks like Real has cleaned up their act. The install of Real Player 10 was mostly painless. I still had to make some modifications in the Preferences dialog to turn off Real Messenger. I could start the download of the free (as in beer) player with only two clicks from their home page. It used to take a lot of hunting around to even find the free (as in beer) version of their player on their web site. All in all, much better. For the first time in many years I didn’t curse all the executives at Real during the install process.
My link to the download page at real.com seems to be going to a different page now. Weird. Anyways, you can get to the download page by starting at real.com, clicking on the Download RealPlayer button, and then choosing Download Free RealPlayer.
Thanks for the hot tips John. I will take your advice NOW & download Real player 10!.

I use ‘Media Player Classic’ ’ Quicktime Alternative’ & ‘Real Alternative’
Also you could try the ‘K-Lite Mega Codec Pack’ (or one of the smaller packs) to ensure you have all codec you might need.
They’re all available here http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/finalbuilds.htm
the player itself is nice but it screwed up my MSIE entirely on my win 2k computer also this player it is not an answer to the question of thinuniking which i do not understandstand exactly maybe he should use some punctuating and make it a bit less brief summary so that i will understand it better or else maybe he could explain with which intention he drops his question here so that i possible can answer his question better
Boy, theres a lot of good stuff in this thread. I’ll add one. I use a program called, ahhem, ‘GSpot’ to find out what codecs are required to run a video. Its also got other good info like bitrates and audio codec info.
Divx rocks my socks!
This seems like a good place to post my problem.
I have Windows Media Player, Quicktime and VirtualDub.
When I download videos from the www, megs seem to play ok, as do avi’s and, but mov. and wmp files dont.
Should I try downloading a new version of my player, or something else?
Thanks for the advise…
Joe,
oi oi savloy. you don’t need to use video players, just get ur self down to tynemouth market and buy a dvd of unicycling. thats ur self sorted, and you knows it.
Joe,
Latest version is probably worth while.
Also get “Real Player” too as it seems to work well. (real.com free version)
Post links to problem videos so others can say what works for them best.
