VERY URGENT: UNICON XII SURVEY

p
Hi all,

Yesterday we had a meeting of all members of the International Committee of the JUA and I
I have some very good news about Unicon XII but we are in a great hurry to conduct a survey
first so the details will have to wait for later. Very briefly:

  1. HIGHLIGHTS

DATES
Registration: July 23, 202
Convention July 24 to August 2 2004

  1. PLACE

The very best we can hope for – like a dream come true. The facilities used for
e$B!!!e(B Tokyo Olympics right in the heart of Tokyo near Yoyogi Park: Roughly:

  • ARTISTIC: Yoyogi National Stadium 2nd Gymnasium
  • RACES: Metropolitan Yoyogi Park Track&Field Stadium
  • MUNI: FUJIMI Panorama All Round Resort (near Mount Fuji)
  • FACILITIES: National Olympics Memorial Youth Center (maybe from only $15 or so a night)

Almost all events including basketball and hockey will be at the Yoyogi facility, all within walking
distance in one of the nicest areas of Tokyo-- Harajuku.

  1. QUICK SURVEY

All of the above is almost certain but is nevertheless provisional. We must determine, as soon
as humanly possible, roughly how many non-Japanese riders will attend so as to get the
reservations for the National Olympics Memorial Youth Center.

Previous email from John Foss indicates that we can expect at least 300 riders. We know that
China, Korea and probably Singapore and Israel will join us, and based on previous Unicons and the
fact that lodging will be VERY cheap, I would be very surprised if we have less than 400 – probably
over 500. We must know the number now as we cannot change it after the reservation is completed.
If less people show up, no problem as we can fill it up with Japanese.

Can some one help us conduct a survey so we get results real quick – about a week.
It need not be accurate, of course. Just rough figures will do.

  1. OTHER QUESTIONS

On basketball, we need to know roughly how long it will take to do all the matches, including
preliminaries. The gym is very expensive to rent. Would one full day be enough (except for
the finals). How many teams can we expect?

The same question goes for hockey, which except for the finals will probably be held in the
tennis court. Would one full day be enough? How many teams can we expect?

I am looking forward to all of your cooperation in getting these questions answered as soon
as possible.

P.S. When replying to this thread, PLEASE DON’T DELETE the people on the ccline (JUA people).

Hi,

@ Survey
Me and my son would like to participate:
that’s 2 from Switzerland

@Questions
At the time being, neither of us is interested in hockey or basketball
(although, both of us have played hockey and thoroughly enjoyed it).

P.S. I don’t think the Cc addresses will work when I post through unicycle.com.

Jack,

Sounds exciting!! There will be about 12 from the Panther Pride Unicycle
Team in Washington.

Thank you,

I estimate about 20 riders from Puerto Rico, maybe more, is too early to
know but we’ll be there for shure.

Maybe Alberto Ruiz can answer this question. I send your letter to him and I
hope he can help you. If you need more information about the Puerto Rico
team you can contact me anytime.

That’s extremely cool. Surely being near Tokyo will increase the
international attendance. I wasn’t sure what we would be able to do in the
area of Akita without having to maker separate trips away from the
convention site.

Now I will be able to take Jacquie to the fancy restaurant where Masuda-san
and Sugano-san took us when we first arrived in 1987. I hope it still
exists! This time, perhaps Jacquie and I can return the favor and take them!

> Previous email from John Foss indicates that we can expect at
> least 300 riders.

Based on the above information, I will change my estimate to minimum 300.
I guess what you need to know is the high number though. Well, I think you
guys are going to set another record, like you did in '87.

But I cannot stress this enough – Based on the experiences of past hosts in
trying to predict UNICON crowds, it’s impossible. You can only guess. For
this past UNICON, Tom Daniels got promises and assurances from groups that
did not commit, and very large numbers of people only registered in the last
few weeks before the convention.

Economic factors around the world may change, making it either easier or
harder for people to go on what may be a long and expensive trip. Also, our
sort continues to grow and change. With the online availability of unicycles
in North America and Europe, I think new people are getting involved in the
sport faster than ever before. Who knows what may change in the next year
and a half!

> and based on previous Unicons and the

> surprised if we have less than 400 – probably
> over 500.

With the cheap lodging, I think this is a safe estimate. If you are able to
fill unused rooms with Japanese participants, I think you are safe to guess
high. If China drew as many people as it did in 2000, with problematic
communications and details, I think Japan can easily attract lots more.

Unfortunately I can only offer those very general estimates. I can’t even
get my local Sacramento area riders to go to MUni Weekends, so I won’t speak
for any of them, though I bet the Hooten family will go. No less than 5 from
Sacramento, possibly many more.

> Can some one help us conduct a survey so we get results real
> quick – about a week.
> It need not be accurate, of course. Just rough figures will do.

We have had trouble over the years surveying the unicycling world. It’s very
hard to get much participation, so I think you will need to focus on
large-scale estimates. For many people, what they say in 2002 about what
they will do in 2004, especially if it involves large expenditures of money,
can only be a rough guess.

> On basketball, we need to know roughly how long it will take
> to do all the matches, including preliminaries. The gym is
> very expensive to rent.

I cannot speak for the basketball and hockey experts, but I think they may
indicate to you that they don’t need a fancy gym for preliminary games. If
more modest facilities are available for more time and hopefully less money,
I think they would prefer that.

> How many teams can we expect?

You can control this number if you want, by requiring pre-registration of
teams. If you only want serious teams, they will register early. There are
always plenty of ad-hoc teams at UNICONs because people join up with others
after arriving at the convention, but these are more for-fun teams and
usually not contenders in the actual championships.

The same applies to hockey, but the point is to let people try things, not
just pit the top teams against each other. I remember the basketball
tournament at UNICON III, which I think was mostly held during dinner. There
couldn’t have been more than 3 or 4 teams, as I recall. One of the teams
included Jonathan Haglund (remember him?), who had just learned how to ride.
He was definitely playing for fun!

I am interested in opening a dialogue on the general aspects of the
convention. I would like to see lots more workshops. I would also like to
see less of the “everybody is supposed to compete” aspect. Our conventions
are too big for this. There should be some events designed for everybody to
enter, but others where we watch just the experts only and are entertained.
This will leave us lots of time for the workshops, plus games, group rides,
and whatever other activities you would like to do.

Jacquie and I are looking forward to a HUGE UNICON XII in Tokyo!

Re: VERY URGENT: UNICON XII SURVEY

Hi Jack,
Sounds great (although I would’ve preferred somewhere outside Tokyo as
I’ve spent years there). Anyway, Muni at Mt Fuji sounds fun and I’ve never
climbed it during the “season”. Imagine how much fun it will be riding down
from the summit with a bunch of people on unicycle!!! They should make that
an organized activity for one day, maybe start at midnight for the full
affect.

I’ll be there with my family (3). I don’t know how many people from the SF
area in California will make it, but I’d guess 5 to 10.

Looking forward to it!

I expect to attend. If indeed we can make it there will be 5 from my family. I expect that there will be as many as 10 from Utah.

It is, however, a long way for us. In terms of time, distance, money, etc. Still, we hope to be there. I’m sure it will be one not to miss.

I’ve never travelled internationally. I suppose short of a unicycling convention there is little that would motivate me to want to either.

p.s. Jack, hows the airseat/handle/computer working out for you?

Re: VERY URGENT: UNICON XII SURVEY

Greetings

I want to thank everyone for their quick response to the survey. We now know more or less where
we stand regarding reservations for accommodation. Basically, we are thinking of doing significant
overbooking, and fill up the rest with Japanese, who will be happy to stay in those supercheap and
convenient facilities.

There two important questions that have not been dealt with, and I wold appreciate it if Rolph
and Alberto, the experts on hocley and basketball, could reply as soon as possible, since these
are the major logistic issues left.

  1. On basketball, we need to know roughly how long it will take to do all the matches, including
preliminaries. The gym is very expensive to rent. Would one full day be enough (except for
the finals)? I suspect definitely not. How many teams can we expect?

  2. The same question goes for hockey, which except for the finals will probably be held in the
tennis court. Would one full day be enough? How many teams can we expect?

I am looking forward to all of your cooperation in getting these questions answered as soon
as possible.

If you have not see the full announcement, it is below.

Re: VERY URGENT: UNICON XII SURVEY

Most of the answers that Alberto gave for basketball apply for hockey as
well, in particular, the time requirements and the number of expected
teams are about the same.

A few differences:

  • It is important that the gym is big enough for hockey. The one that we
had in North Bend was quite small. What is the size of the tennis
    court that you suggest?

  • We do not need referees, we supply our own.

  • We need goals (same size as for ice-hockey).

Greetings
Rolf
