has anyone tried valerian root to help them sleep? i have been having really bad insomnia for a few weeks now and i am fed up with it. i picked up a bottle from walmart just now and am going to try this stuff out. it kinda stinks but i am all for trying anything to help me sleep right now. if someone has tried it, did it work?
I have a friend that swears by sleepy time tea, with Valerian. He said it gave him cool dreams to.
I have tried it a bunch of times, but it has little of no effect on me. No harm in trying it.
The reason why I don’t try insomnia medication is because waking up is harder. Is it really?
well velarian root isn’t a medication, but the medications are made to wear off after 8 hours. that’s why they say to get at least 8 hours of sleep on the commercials.
so i tried the verlatian root last night. i don’t know if it had any effect on me but i did have some wierd dreams. i’ll stick with it for a little while and see if it works.
Let me see:
- you can do a stomach-on-seat hand-on-wheel wheel walk (From the photo).
- you’re 19 years old
- you’re experiencing rapid-onset insomnia a few weks ago after sleeping well.
Has something changed? Did you get a sedentary job or return to sitting at a desk in school after having a position that allowed lots of physical activity?
Working out less? Something on your mind?
There is not much difference between prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal meds. if they cause sleep, they all work on the systems brain/body.
I didn’t mean just pharmaceutical medicines, but all remedies. Couldn’t find the right word.
lol
- that’s a superman mount
- yes.
- i had insomnia for a long while before i got my summer job bucking hay. i worked really long and really hard hours and got almost no sleep. this cured my insomnia but when i stopped bucking hay my insomnia slowly came back. even if i work out i still can’t sleep.
I tried 4 pills of it, and it did nothing. Then again, all pill formed medication has minimal effects on me unless I take well above the recommended dosage.
I just remember it smelling bad and tasting weird, then staying up till 3am.
I just took 400 mg of it for dream and sleep aid. I’ll tell you how it works for both. For dream I’m also taking Bcomplex and chocolate. Any out of the usual you’ll here from me.
I probably shouldn’t have taken the valerian, fish oil, and daily vita all at once on an empty stomach, ouch >.<
If you want a different sleep aid suggestion, try diphenhydramine (the stuff in advil PM). It’s non addictive and non habit forming. You can get 100 capsules for $13 or something like that online, Walgreen also sells them in 30 capsule boxes if you just wanna try it. Not sure about side affects though.
My valarian smelled kinda like kitty litter
That’s a sign of quality I think.
If you take fish oil caps, you might want to try hemp oil. Legally grown in Canada, and about 25 $/liter at Amazon the last I checked, it has the most Omega 3 fat content of any plant oil. It tastes good and is used like olive oil, only it must be kept in the fridge. I have never had any spoil though, but I think it’s poorer shelf life, and the newness of public awareness of healthy fats, is the only reason it is not much more popular.
For insomnia, there are also other hemp products that can be helpful, but I think you need a prescription.
valerian root does have a strong smell. that’s how it got it’s name. it comes from a greek word meaning something about being strong, referring to its smell.
I would try hemp oil but my mom would think I’m a druggy even if I showed her a link proving it didn’t have the side effects and was legal. Oh well, fish oil will work for now…
By the way, I took 1 pill of Valerian (I think 400mg?) and it had a slightly drowsy feeling. I’m sure the effect would be greater if I took 2 or 3 of them but I really only took it for dream aid which it didn’t help much (Remembered what’s my average, 3 dreams.). Maybe one of these days I’ll try it again but for now, I’ll pass.
Placebo effect ftw.
Valerian never helped me, and I’ve tried several different kinds.
The bottle even says no actual scientific studies have happened for valerian root.
yes no scientific studies have been done because they want to get around the fda. but this stuff has been used since hippocrates to treat insomnia. i’ve tried it and i felt more tired. i don’t know if it is the placebo effect as you say but it did help me. now i don’t stay asleep, but at least i did fall asleep.
Cause someone pain, then give them morphine and the pain goes away.
Continue this for a while, then replace the morphine with Saleen solution, it works to a surprising extent.
Here’s the best part though, add a drug that cancels out morphine and the Saleen will stop working.
Placebo has a biophysical effect that is quite amazing, and whatever works, works regardless of the medicine.
I’ve been reading too much of my books lately. I kept reading that as “Valyrian”.
true, it is amazing what the human brain can physically do.
