Use The search feature!!!

Do you hate it when people tell you to use the search feature, do you think they should just tell you the bloody answer and not hassle you about it or do u think its a good thing?

I think people should just be a bit nicer to people and give them the answer they want instead of leaving a comment saying. " Search Feature".

Whats your opinion on this?

From Brendon.v

Give the answer and tell them to search next time.

Tsk, tsk*

*As one example.

cmon people, get into it lol.

If you want to keep information accessable and findable, you should not duplicate topics.
So take responisbility, and point others to their responsibilty.
Do you want to be able to find answers, or do you just need a place to dump your questions?

All duplicate threads posted just knock actual good topics off of the front page. If people use the search feature (put there for a reason) duplicates can be reduced, and people will no longer have to say “Use the search feature.”

Brendon, I think that almost 25% of your current 191 posts are new threads.

Yes, you should search more.

I really appreciate it when I see a new thread by a relatively new poster starting off with:" I ran a search and found this and this, but still want to ask … "

To my mind that is pretty impressive Forum Conduct and I don’t see a reason why not everyone can do that.
Since some people may not be aware of the SEARCH function, I think there is definately space for some education in a reply to a new ‘repeat’ thread.

I’ve often responded with a link to a SEARCH RESULTS page and I think I’ll keep doing that.

hasn’t there been a thread about this before…c’mon people, use search! (kidding).

I agree with Jerrick. Be helpful and then remind to search.

I agree.

I also think young BrendonV should get himself a FaceBook page for all these polls and discussion documents.

Just a thought, use it, don’t use it.

This isn’t really true. There will always be people that want to ask “noob” questions no matter how unduplicated the threads are. The first few pages of threads don’t really contain many answers to their questions. And to be fair, the search function can be useful, but does kind of suck. It seems to turn up a reverse chronological list of any thread with those words in it, which doesn’t always mean its a thread about those words. Half the time, you, personally, have to search through the search results to find one relevant thread out of 100.

And over time the answers may change. Or new people may have something relevant to say. So duplicate threads aren’t always a bad thing.

“Are geared unicycles possible?” being a classic example.

Oh, I like this a lot. What do you want to hear?

I think maybe you get told to do this alot because at a glance, it’s looking like most of your recent threads are duplicates - and it makes you look quite behind the times when you post something somebody else already has!

It just seems to me that a lot people are perfectionists on here. Whenever I start a thread, I search to make sure it’s original, make sure my grammar is correct, make sure the point of the thread is perfectly clear upon reading it…it feels like if I don’t get it exactly perfect, I’ll get a reprimand from the forum for being a complete retard. Of course, after all this, someone stills tells me that my title needs to be more relevant next time.

I don’t think we’re quite as bad as that Joseppi.
The effort you put into your thread is appreciated and it’s only thru encouraging more people to do the same that we can maintain the level of these fora.

Most are not as bad as that; you’re right. But there are definitely a few, and those are the ones whose voices are heard in this respect.
