Upgrading the Coker

1st upgrade: the seat
2nd upgrade: uh…

I got an interesting offer from a fellow juggler, to reinforce the wheel
with carbon fiber. It’d be a couple of hundred bucks and probably ugly, but
it would probably strengthen the wheel, maybe a lot. Opinions?

A handle would be nice for hills. Slime might be a good idea, given that
there’s exactly one supplier of 36" diameter inner tubes in the city.

What else?

Right now the aforementioned fellow juggler is truing my wheel and
tightening my spokes and so forth, so I can’t ride until Thursday evening.
I can still type, though.

P.S. I damaged the viscount seat plastic armor thingies: lost screws,
cracks and gouges… Short of becoming a competent unicyclist, is there
anything I can do to prolong the life of my next, presumably nicer, seat?

Sounds like a good deal for the juggler. Have you called John and Amy
Drummond? I believe my carbon-fiber seat was about half that, maybe less.

Slime? Not sure about what you mean. A handle is excellent not only for
hills but also for those moments when you lose a bit of balance and need
to pull in the reins a bit. My extension has helped me numerous times.

I have heard that some Coker rims are un-truable – that they are
inherently ‘off’ and can’t be fixed. Who knows. Mine is certainly a bit
off (after 3000 miles, wouldn’t YOU be a bit off?!), but it rides fine.
The only big downside would be if I wanted to attach my brake.

Get good at catching the uni. And by the way, my extension takes a lot of
the beating that would otherwise go to the seat. The ext. has held up
nicely, too, which is amazing considering the nature of some of my UPDs.

dont fill the tube with slime, its heavy and likes to coagulate in clumps.that makes an off balance wheel.(slime tubes are more hi-tech,i’m not talking about those)the crap that you put in a tube from a can is what i mean.

i would just buy a extra tube before you need one.

David Stone, may I ask what the going rate is for the Wyganowski extension?? I lile it over George’s new Coker handle, in that it attaches to teh frame instead of teh seat. It seems to me that it would be more solid that way, and I wouldn’t need a cf seat base. Also, do you know if Paul has any extensions in stock?? Thanks in advance

So you think reinforcing a 36" wheel with carbon fiber and a carbon fiber
seat should cost about the same? Just asking, I don’t know anything about
cycling technology, honest.

Extension and carbon fiber seat, gotcha. Thanks!

Re: Upgrading the Coker

Hi Scott,
This is Aj, from juggling. I think he read it wrong. I think he was
talking about contacting Amy and John about a carbon fiber seat. Are you
talking about having your juggler friend build you a carbon fiber wheel
for your Coker? If you are I am definately interested in one also, if
he/she’s willing. Congrats on the hundred feet ride. Thousands of miles
to come!!

Aj

If I recall, his ext, was about $120 including the brake. I am pretty sure
none are in stock.

And yes, I did misunderstand an earlier post about a carbon WHEEL for the
Coker. That price seemed fine, tho the idea is a bit scary – would it
take the bumps and UPDs without cracking?

I had CF wheels on my mountain bike. They were awesome. They would definetly be stronger if done correctly, by a wheel making company who deals in carbon fibre and thermoplastics, like Grimeca, Spinergy, or Spin-(out of business). For some Joe off the street to try to make a CF wheel would be asking for grief.

I don’t even think carbon fibre enhancements to the wheel would work, as it’s the hub->spokes->nipples->rim that give you your strength, and adjustability

Spin wheels were awesome. I always heard rumors about leaving them out in the sun for too long… A guy here in town still has a set new in box.

I owned Spins. They were very strong, very pretty, and very heavy. It also felt like you were riding on triangles. click, click, click, click (as each point would hit the ‘ground’)

I sold them as soon as Spin went out of business, because nobody else could rerim them or do any work on them whatsoever.

Man, the smooth bearings in those suckers though

That guy better leave them in the box, because once they warp (it can be done), flat spot, or even break, they’re garbage.

I would like to convert a Spin wheel into a Uni though, that’d be awesome

Here’s my other love over looking Kavala, Greece

oops, here it is

Still not quite getting it.

It’s not a carbon fiber wheel, it’s carbon fiber reinforcing a Coker wheel.
I can’t see how that would make the wheel MORE fragile…

As for whether the carbon fiber could take the bumps and UPDs… I don’t
know.
