RE: Unicyling and Caffeine Compounds/Coffee/Red Bull Energy Drink?
Thought I’d chip in my 2 pennies worth…
Aside from the high caffeine content Red Bull also contains taurine which is an
extract of bulls bile - hence the name but not something they actively promote.
Someone once told me about an article they’d read about Red Bull and other
taurine based drinks - the details have become somewhat vague but it goes a
little something like this… When you’re doing any form of physical exercise
you burn up a particular chemical in your body that helps sustain said exercise.
Taurine is a supplement to this chemical which means you can go for longer
before chemical X is completely gone. I’m no biologist / chemist / doctor etc.
but that’s how I remember it.

Compounds/Coffee/Red Bull Energy Drink? Importance: Low
The effectiveness of Red Bull depends on what kind of unicycling you intend to
do. Red Bull is mostly caffeine and carbohydrates which means that it will give
you a short energy boost but not a longer sustained level of energy. For a more
sustained boost you need a more balanced energy bar or energy drink containing a
good combination of carbohydrates, fat, and protein.
Red Bull is not going to keep you from bonking (hitting the wall) on a long muni
ride. To keep from bonking you need to fuel up on Cliff bars, Power Bars,
Balance bars and similar energy bars. Red Bull ain’t gonna do it. But if you’re
on a long ride and want a boost to make the last part of the ride then a Red
Bull, Coke, or a cappuccino is a good thing. Nothing wrong with caffeine for a
little boost at the end. But good luck finding a coffee stand or a cold Coke
near the end of a muni ride. Higher concentrations of caffeine (about the amount
of caffeine in 3 or 4 cups of coffee) can help in endurance events but after 4
cups of coffee I think I’d be a little too jittery to unicycle very well. I’ll
take a pocket full of Cliff bars over a bunch of Red Bull’s any day for muni
rides and Coker rides.
I don’t know what kind of effect Red Bull would have on freestyle riding. I’ll
have to experiment after I learn some freestyle skills. And those hockey
players… I have a feeling that the hockey players might enjoy a good Red Bull
at half-time and then a good pint after the game.
