Unicyclist on TV!

Last evening, while in an adjoining room, my son shouted that a unicyclist would
be coming on Ripley’s Believe It or Not in a few short minutes. He would be ride
some 4 " away from a cliff. I immediately raced to the TV to watch. I think the
unicyclist’s name was Chris. Did anyone get the unicyclist’s surname name, or
see the program, by chance? BTW, I was thoroughly inpressed my this interview
and the outstanding skill level of this rider!!

Re: Unicyclist on TV!

That it was. Thanks, John for posting… my VCR was good to me that night. It
was a short segment, but still rather cool… a little overly hyped, as I would
expect from a show like believe it or not. Personally, I liked the interview
segments, but that’s probably because I’ve already seen universe, and I enjoy
learning about the people doing the riding.

Yeah, it’s hard to stop this. There may be others following this one (once you
get on one of these shows then copycat shows start calling)- I just have to hope
that people continue to realize that it’s not me doing the sensationalizing!

Cheers,

Kris Holm.

Re: Unicyclist on TV!

there’s nothing wrong with a little hype. I’ve never actually watched the show
before this episode, so I don’t know what’s usual for them, but they did a
decent job showing that you were still a normal person.

If you (or other unicyclists) make it on any other shows, please post it here –
I generally don’t watch enough television to see the commercials on time to
catch the show.

Re: Unicyclist on TV!

And then get the New World Disorder video. It has some of the same footage that
was in the Ripley’s show and a little bit more.

I just picked up the New World Disorder video last week at my local downhill
bike shop. It’s a good video. But there is only a little more than 3 minutes of
Kris on the video. You definately get more unicyling for the dollar with the
Universe video.

Re: Unicyclist on TV!

This must have been Kris Holm. Here’s what John Foss posted a couple of days
ago:

All,

I just saw a commercial on TBS for the Ripley’s Believe it or Not show with Kris
Holm in it, to be on this Wednesday at 8:00 pm Eastern. This means 5:00 for us
on the West coast. Time to warm up the VCR timer…

Stay on top, John Foss, the Uni-Cyclone jfoss@unicycling.com www.unicycling.com

Being in the Netherlands, I have never seen Kris perform except on stills, but
judging from the comments that Kris collects on this newsgroup I bet you were
impressed!

Cheers, Klaas

That was Kris Holm, a Canadian (Pacific Coast). Kris has taken Muni to a new
level, has improved the image of unicycling among the non- rider. Kris is also a
great young man. Javier Ruiz, Jose Roman and I had the opportunity to see him
from Puerto Rico.

Re: Unicyclist on TV!

I was very impressed with Kris on Ripley’s. I caught the show by accident while
flipping through channels. I couldn’t believe my eye’s, I thought I was hardcore
until seeing that. I can’t help wondering how Kris has kept from being badly
injured. I have a long list of injuries without doing stuff near that hard.
Well…more power to him!

Re: Unicyclist on TV!

There’s a preview clip of New World Disorder online for all that are interested:
http://www.bikemag.com/features/102700_nwd.shtml

Video clip 1 has some Kris Holm footage (or Christ Holm as they credit on the
page). Not for the faint of heart, there are some pretty sick drops in this
preview video (on bikes)

Re: Unicyclist on TV!

Get the UniVerse video, it has a lot more in-depth footage then the quickie
Ripley’s show (which I also enjoyed). Definitely worth the entry fee.

Re: Unicyclist on TV!

Thanks for posting that…I am so mad at myself that I missed the Ripley’s
show…twice! I hardly watch television, so I did not see the commercial. That
jump over the mountain was amazing. Are there any more clips of Kris Holm?

I’ve been riding around town on my new (to me, anyway! =P) Coker. It is sooo
much fun and a lot faster than my 24" uni. I am using, I think, 145mm pedals. (I
think that was the number.) I believe the gentleman I bought it from put on
longer ones for some reason. Can you recommend that I put on shorter ones?

There’s the UNiVERsE video, which is great fun. About an hour of great
unicycling. Then there are a couple of mountain bike videos that have
shorter clips of Kris. New World Disorder and Dirty Dreams (3?) something
about North Shore.

Man, those are sure loooong pedals! (presuming you’re talking about the crank
arm length…<grin>)

>(I think that was the number.) I believe the gentleman I bought it from put on

The stock cranks from Coker are 150mm (6"). A lot of people seem to like
shorter ones, in the 110-127mm range. I recently put 127s on mine after
stripping the pedal threads on one of my stock ones. I was used to the stock
150s and was pretty happy with them. I’m still getting used to the 127s.
Freemounting is harder, but pedalling is smoother and it seems faster. Overall,
I felt like I had more control with the 150s. I don’t know if I’m ready to go
back or not, but definiitely remember that there are tradeoffs when you change
'em. For a new Coker rider, I’d recommend sticking with something close to the
stock size for awhile.
