Unicycling mailing list is up; some forum.member posts attached

Hi All,

The unicycling@winternet.com mailing list is now working again!

The unicycling@winternet.com mailing list broke last Thursday. Some e-mail
messages sent to it that Thursday and the following Friday bounced back to
me. I sent these back to the original senders where the senders address
was very easy to determine from the From header. All such bounced e-mail
messages from forum.member posts are attached below. You may want to
resend bounced posts now (See next paragraph).

Note: If you posted your message to rec.sport.unicycling, everyone
reading that newsgroup saw it. However, if you sent it
directly to unicycling@winternet.com (includes forum.member
posts), only I saw it.

Anything sent to the unicycling mailing list from about 22:00 UTC (GMT)
last Friday (19 Oct) until 15:35 UTC (25 Oct) is gone. Sorry.

Again, the list is now working and some unsent forum.member posts are
attached below.

Sincerely,

Ken Fuchs <kfuchs@winternet.com> rec.sport.unicycling proponet &
unicycling@winternet.com list owner

Knee Protection

Hullo all,

I have been unicycling for a few months now, and I am (finally) starting
to do things that could have more painful consequences than my typical
tumbling! I have been using an old pair of roller blade knee pads with a
hard plastic knee cup, and I find that these are excellent for direct hits
to the pavement, but not so good for slides (they slip off). I would
appreciate hearing peoples’ opinions of the knee protection afforded by
Roach DH leg armour. If a Roach (or 661) encased knee cracks into a hard
surface, how well is it protected?

Another option available are Corerat leg armour (these may be a
Canadian/Western North America thing). This armour provides protection for
the front of the leg and sports an attractively skookum knee cup, but
lacks padding for the calf or back of the knee (see www.corerat.com if
interested). If I am intending to participate in simple MUni and urban
uni, would I regret the lack of posterior padding? (it WOULD be cooler?)
Have any unicyclists tried these? What do you think?

I thank you in advance.

andrea

PS. I am short, so all armour brands would likely be fairly long on me
(from the archived posts, I understand that too-short armour can cause
knee exposure problems for the long of leg, but this would not be a
factor in my 5’3" decision!).

I live in very hilly Seattle. I take a 3 mile ride during which I
encounter 4 stop signs, about 40 open intersections, and 4 VERY steep
hills about a city block long each. I make this ride in 18 minutes for an
average speed of 10 mph. There is a lot of speed-up/slow-down for cross
traffic at the intersections. This is a comfortable pace.

Where I come from, sidewalks are pavement. Anyway, this is in the street.
The Big Boy goes too fast for the sidewalk.

Correction: That does not include forum.member posts. All posts from the
forums at unicyclist.com are sent directly to the newsgroup and could
therefore be seen there, hence the header “X-Sender:
newsgate@newsguy.com”. Newsgate is the gateway used for email to go from
the newsgroup to the email list.

Thanks Ken for getting the list set back up!

Ken,

If I understand correctly then people sending via e-mail would have to
send again and that then corrects part of the problem. The other part of
the problem is that messages that have been posted to rec.sport.unicycling
have not propagated to the mailing list subscribers. My question: is any
central effort planned to get these messages to them as yet? One option
would be (either by the individual senders, or centrally) to post these
messages again on rec.sport.unicycling, but that seems a bit overkill.
Maybe put them on a website?

Thanks for your effort in putting the list back up again.

I’d suggest that everyone that uses unicycling@winternet.com and e-mail as
their primary interface to rec.sport.unicycling check out:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=rec.sport.unicycling&num=100&hl=en

or

http://groups.google.com and search for rec.sport.unicycling.

Read all messages between 18 Oct and 25 Oct as most of those never made
it to the mailing list (those that made it were sent early 18 Oct and
late 25 Oct).

Anything that never made it to rec.sport.unicycling should be posted.

Anything very useful could be reposted for the benefit of those of us with
only e-mail access (I’d suggest a subject line prefix of REPOSTED:).

Correction: the above should have said ‘excludes’ rather than ‘includes’.

It could be done, but as you said, it’d be a bit overkill and there would
be a huge mass of emails (163 of them) that would be sent then.

> Maybe put them on a website?

They are already on a website at http://www.unicyclist.com/forums  Along
with searchable archives of the posts to the newsgroup since it began.
There are also other places online that archive newsgroups such as Google.
Or you can view the posts via a newsreader at news:rec.sport.unicycling

If anyone wants them sent to them via email, I can send them a plain text
file that includes them all. This file could then be imported into just
about any email application. Let me know.
