Unicycling has made me hate my son!

Now, I’ve been practising on my trusty old 20" for just under a year since taking up the one-wheel challenge, and I reckon I’m doing all right (slowly moving up on level 3).

My son Joe (who is 10) learned to unicycle at BUC (mere weeks ago) and has not only monopolised my uni (with my old too-short seat and stem) since then, preventing me from practising, but can now do rolling hops, hop up kerbs and ride seat out behind! All things I can’t do yet.

I now have my uni back, but that’s another problem, as the only reason I have it is because the Qu-ax trials we bought him for his 10th birthday yesterday is so much better than my generic e-bay trash uni!

So now he looks cooler than me too (ok, I realise that could be natural in any case, without unis…).

AND he has so much more spare time to practice than me.

It’s SO UNFAIR!!! :frowning:

Congratulations! That’s a very cool story.

leave a skate board at the top of the stairs…A plaster cast should slow down his progress a bit…

Just kidding…It’s cool that he’s doing so well. How old is he?

If it’s any consolation, I hate your son, too.

It is Naomi’s 3rd law: " Any kid will learn far far quicker than his
parents, and will rapidy exceed their achievements in absoulutely anything
as long as it is not maths, physics, french, biolo…, washing
up."

The only way around it is a swift application of the theory and practise of
conservation of momentum, in which the parent certainly has mechanical
advantage, and almost certainly the surprise element. (conservation of
wha…**%$£&$ )

You start out young and energetic. Then, your children are born and they suck energy out of you until you die. Get used to it.

Raphael doesn’t really hate your son although I laughed out loud when I read his response. He merely envies your son’s abilities and hates himself for it.

I am right there with you. 2 of my boys (age 7 and 9) and I started this as a family activity about a year ago–something we would learn together. They both took off and left me within a matter of weeks.

On the other hand, I do get a lot of joy out their success and it sounds like you do as well.

Re: Unicycling has made me hate my son!

Sounds like a case of uni envy.

Good for your son.

Just don’t feed your son so that he gets real weak and his bones are frail so that when he tries to unicycle, he’s too weak and falls off and breaks his arms and legs, so then you take him to the hospital, steal his unicycle, and get really good while he’s gone.

That’s what grandkids are for. When they come along, you get to watch the same thing happen to your son. It’s a long-term thing, but I think it’s part of the joy people get out of being grandparents.

If you want to slow your son’s progress, make him buy his next unicycle with his own money!

What?! I thought a kindred spirit kinda thing was going on there!

D*mn that irony thing!

Why would you take Harper’s word over mine with regard to how I feel?

Now I think I hate you, too.

My god Steve, I am sooo impressed.
Tell him he can’t come to the next BUC!!!
Cathy

I’m now thinking up witty comments to throw at him while he’s riding, like,
“Where’s your other wheel?”
and
“Join a circus!”

and not that I’m sulking or anything, but he’s not allowed to play in my beach buggy, so there!

LOL

Re: Unicycling has made me hate my son!

There’s only one answer to this, Time to upgrade what you have. I would recommend that you get top of the line. That way, at best, he can only get another uni that’s equal to yours.

“Grandparents are those people who encourage you kids to do all those things
they definitely would not let you do!”

That was obviously mistyped : "Your kids " not “you kids” .

I hate keyboards, I never seem to get mistypes with a biro.

Because he has read my posting history and knows that I neither lie nor exaggerate. I feel your pain, Raphael, and just thought it wise to express it for you. I know what’s best for you. I’m your village; I’m here to take care of you. Hate me instead.

Steve-

The Unicyclist of Oz advice sounds good. Consider it.
