What do you guys think the unicycles will look like in the upcoming year?..10 years? …50 years?
Maybe something like this:
Well, one thing is certain, they will have one wheel.:D;)
You mean hovercycles?
V-frames.
They’re coming.
Are those KH36’s?
That’s amazing!
Do you have more information on that uni, it looks awesome!
BTW: I saw the Puerto Rican team an NAUCC09. Nice job!
I’d like to see a 42" or 44" wheel with a v-frame so you can sit below the top of the wheel if you put the seat all the way down : ) That’d be a dramatic riding position though.
Yeah, it does look awsome. I just wish we could see what is underneath the two “spokes”. But if it works kind of how I imagine it could, then it’s workable, and also gearable too.
There’s some more info here;

STM - still waiting for the hovercycle to be released to the general public
Why is it that designers always design things with spokeless wheels. Yes they look nice and futuristic, but they’re gonna be heavy, weak, and generally not very good at staying round and being wheels.
Oh and make crazy claims about their designs - the lower pedals make it easy to ride for normal people? He knows this how? Because he’s ridden loads of unicycles with lowered pedals?
Thinking about the last point - has anyone ever made a pedal with a deliberately off centre axle - a bit like BC pegs, dropping down a few inches - be interesting to see if it was any easier to ride.

Judging by the bikes in my nearest “prestige” bike shop, Freewheel, the unicycles of the future will look like the unicycles of 20 years ago, because retro will be where it’s at.
However, for the genuine enthusiast, the nonocycle with the lightweight folding seat and “ski pole” soft surface capability is the way to go:

Because that makes it look cool, as you said, and as it’s a design project, in most cases it’s not a practicality project so weight and other real-world constraints are not an issue. It looks interesting and cool, and I’m pretty sure that’s the purpose of the assignment. At least in Industrial Design, where somebody else is supposed to be doing the engineering…
My gut tells me it would be a little easier to ride, but probably not much easier to learn to ride on. For the same reason non-cyclists tend to ride with the seat much too low, being closer to the ground seems to make people feel better. And having the pedals inboard (not on wide cranks) would keep them from being ground-scrapers. But I don’t know how much difference a “lower center of gravity” will make when it’s still on a one-wheeled device.
And if that’s true, how come giraffe unicycles are easier to balance?
Very dramatic. If you were actually lowered to where your crotch was below the top of the wheel, your butt would be so far off the back the frame would be tilted way forward to keep you centered over the wheel. So your butt would most likely still end up being above the wheel.
Schwinn already did this in the mid-90s, when they went from their more modern, Miyata-like 24s of the 80s back to black-and-chrome-with-steel-rim again. And crap pedals instead of the indoor-friendly ones. I have nothing against retro, as long as it harks back to something worth remembering…
You linked “nono” to the Wikipedia article for “nona”?
I think he means something more like “NO NO”
For extreme portability, consider the nanocycle? The hard part is finding it after you’ve put it down.
I think the future very well may hold freecoasting unicycles with some type of system installed on some hubs that allow people to ride backwards.
On the topic of freewheeling unicycles how about one with a coaster brake?
But really what is the future of unicycles without the revolutionary DAKOROMAN DRIVE SYSTEM!
I sort of miss that guy.
All of the unicycles in my basement are unicycles of the future. And in the near future, I will be riding them.
