Unicycles allowed on the tube? (London)

Hey guys,

I’m heading up to London next weekend and I definitely want to bring my Unicycle, a 29 Inch Qu-ax Cross. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with bringing a similiar sized unicycle on the Tube, is it allowed?

Isn’t a uni a not-neccesary-to-fold b*ke?

Surely it takes up a comparable amount of space to a folding?

Wrap the wheel with a couple of bin bags. Disguises it well.
I think they are worried about the length and inconvenience of a standard 2 wheeler.
Trouble is there are always the odd jobsworths about.
In practical terms if held vertically it takes up less space than an average suitcase.

Or just tell them you have folded your other wheel and most of the frame away.

I’ve done it more than once, just walk through the turnstile quickly with it, there’s no way anyone who works on the tube is going to take the effort to follow you to tell you you can’t take it on.

“Uni Hate”

I had a bad experience with my uni on public transportation. Beware of “uni hate”. I think I posted a topic on this a few years ago.

I’ve taken unis on the tube loads of times, 20", 24", 29" and 36", never had a problem, although I tend to avoid the deeper lines (smaller trains) with the 29 and 36.

You shouldn’t have any problems on the following lines which are shallow and have the bigger trains.

District (Green)
Hammersmith and City (Pink)
Circle (Yellow)
Metropolitan (Purple)

You’ll probably be OK on the rest.

Don’t even think about trying to get on the tube with a uni during rush hour in central London.

I’ve never had a problem with bringing my 36er onto the Underground.

I’ve also been allowed to bring it onto buses, subject to the driver, but then again you may say that the bus argument defeats the object of owning a 36er :stuck_out_tongue:

Tonight I was refused entry at a station where I’ve been allowed on before. The station master said, “You can’t bring bikes onto the tube and I know that is a unicycle but we don’t allow it”.

London Transport have the final say as this FAQ quote states:

“Our staff can refuse permission for you to take any item onto our services.”

In hindsight they seem to have a point. Imagine standing on a packed platform with a 36er during rush hour and the wheel suddenly swerves, knocking someone onto the track…

i doubt the swerving thing would happen, but a 36" is pretty big, and maybe seen more as a bike than a 20, 24 or 29. Its ok on buses, I got on 2 the other day and both drivers said “its a good thing you left the other wheel behind or you wouldn’t be allowed on” word for word the same.

I’m sure a 29 would be fine, just not at rush hour.
