Yep, that’s all totally true.

You definately don’t need to be able to freemount to ride offroad. I
started offroad way before I could freemount well offroad. I’ve mainly
ridden places with enough trees so this isn’t a problem, but as long as
you have someone along who can freemount after providing a shoulder to
start off then everything is fine. By the end of a long ride I often used
to find myself having lots of trouble freemounting due to being really
tired anyway.

As for fear, you can always walk scary bits and ride the less scary
bits until the less scary bits become not scary bits and you can ride
more and more.

Interestingly, I went out to do some muni last weekend with another
unicyclist and a cyclist and I think the total number of actual falls
(falling down as opposed to jumping off and walking) was unicycles 0,
cyclist 4. And they think we’re mad?

Hello Jody,

I’ve been trying to encourage my other half for ages to learn to ride a
little. With fairly basic riding skills I’m sure she could manage a ride
in the park, or a forest trail. But she much prefers to have a horse
between her legs  Expensive, smelly, sweaty thing - and the horse isn’t
much better!

PS: Joke! Joke! Don’t flame me (much) - unless you really want to.

There was an article in the paper a bit back about horseriders learning to
unicycle to improve their balance, maybe you should tell her about that?

This very long url points to an article about someone who unicycled to
help his horseriding balance, you’ll have to copy and paste it to get it
to work. Admittedly it was for Rodeo riding, but I can’t find any other
articles at the moment.

Thanks, Joe. Unfortunately, Mary is today lending her (unused) Nimbus to
the child of one of her riding friends… I’ll look anyway.
