Unicycle Shops in Texas?

Hi,

I’ve decided to start unicycling last night after seeing Beirne’s signature in
comp.lang.perl and went straight to the web site.

My problems is that I need a unicycle now, and I can find one bicycle shop in
Austin that carries more than one brand or does mail ordering business. Does
anyone know if there’s a place in Austin, Houston, San Antonio that has a decent
selection of unicycles, or does mail ordering business?

Should I just call Semcycle directly? How much does a 24" cost?

Thanks.

Re: Unicycle Shops in Texas?

As I recall Austin is about 3 hours or so S. of Dallas (last time I made that
drive, there were attack helicopters going low over the interstate - got home,
watching the news, turned out they had attacked this place near Waco ran by some
guy named David Koresh). At any rate, before I left the Dallas area I got a
giraffe unicycle at a bike shop right off 635 - on the NE side, across the
interstate from a Nissan place, not far past a water slide park. It’s a big
bicycle shop, but I forget the name of it. At any rate, on the ceiling they had
the giraffe and 2 normal uni’s, one of which was a , uh, shoot, what`s that
Japanese company, starts with H, makes 4 wheelers and such as well, no longer
makes unicycles??? Anyway, there was one of those there, but that was nearly 2
years ago now. So they at least carry unicycles (literally - they were hanging
from the ceiling).

Sorry if this wasn’t as helpful as I intended, maybe I can find out the

Schwinn! That’s the name I was trying to remember! Thanks (okay, it doesn’t
start with an H, but the H sound is predominant at the beginning). Yeah, there
was a Schwinn 24" standard on the ceiling, but like I said, that was awhile ago.

I always wondered if anyone looked at my sig. Thanks for joining the list.

It’s hard to find a good unicycle at most local stores. Your best bet is a
Schwinn, but they have been out of the business for a few years now and the
store inventories have dried up. Other store brands will probably be of
lower quality.

Since I recommend buying a good first unicycle, Semcycle would be a good choice.
You can get them mail order from several vendors listed on the FAQ. You should
probably call them rather than sending snail mail to inquire about unicycles.
Semcycles cost between $130 and $190 depending on which model you get.

Well, Thanks guys. I’ve already got a Cyclepro clone (“Summit”, also make in
Taiwan). I can’t wait to start and I’ve promised myself a Semcycle when I
reach Level 1.

About Schwinn: I called the Schwinn dealer in town, they told me that Schwinn
will be reentering the unicycle market in 1996.

P.S. I can already ride 5-10m unassisted with a dis/graceful dismount at the
end!
