unicycle pics

Hi,

I’ve tried a couple of times to send pictures of my brake and custom MUni setup,
as scanned jpeg files (as attachments). They don’t seem to be getting through.
Anybody know if there is a problem with emailing this kind of file?

-KH.

RE: unicycle pics

It is possible that the server is not set-up to handle some file
extensions. This may be to try to keep things like pictures off the
message boards that take up a lot of space and will slow things down.
This is just a guess.

To where? Generally, it’s not a good idea to post large attachments like
pictures to a discussion group (usenet or mailing list). People (like me) with
slow links may not want the extra 50-200k being crammed into their mailbox. If
you’re trying to send to the list, the list server might be rejecting the
messages for being too big.

There shouldn’t be any technical problems, as long as your mailer knows how to
attach things properly. I doubt Eudora (which you appear to be using) would have
a problem with that.

do you have a web page? Maybe you could just upload them to a site and give the
mailing list the web address to go to and see the pics.

Good idea. Brett Bymaster kindly offered to post them on his website. Actually,
it was a good thing that it didn’t go through on the ng- the 4 pictures were
about 500k! The main thing I thought people might be interested in is the custom
rail/brake attachment, which allows any seatpost, plus a brake, to be added to a
Miyata seat.

Cheers,

Kris.

I hope you don’t mean sending to the list/newsgroup. Posting binaries to a
discussion group is a very bad thing to do, that seriously upsets a very large
number of people all over the planet, who will curse you to themselves, and
possibly in public too.

If that was what you were trying, it looks like the list server or your news
server is protecting you for your own good. If it wasn’t, it’s probably not
specific to pictures of unicycles, and you could ask elsewhere.

Do we have a policy for the group on posting binaries? If not we should. There
should be a web page that describes the rules & regs of the newsgroup and email
gateway. Large binaries have been successfully sent through in the past, to the
dismay of many members.

I know there is a message everyone gets when they first subscribe to the group,
but I think it’s outdated and could use an overhaul.

There isn’t a group policy, but it is considered general netiquette that one
doesn’t post binaries unless the group is especially designed for it, such as a
group in the alt.binaries hierarchy.

Adding something to the initial message would be good.
