Hey, I thought about posting it on Rec.Unicycling, but I figured it’s a bit random… Does anyone know how unicycling clubs start, sort of? Because there’s none where I live, and I was thinking “There’s sposed to be 5 riders atleast in my town, it might be fun to make a club” Any ideas? I should try to get their phone numbers first of all…
AND THEN?
Any suggestions are welcome. Unless they involve underwear. Or the lack of underwear.
When we started the BUUC (see address below) we started by getting contact info (also was a bit easier since most of the members are students) and then figured out when a good time to meet was. Mike and I (as ringleaders) also contacted the Athletics department about an indoors riding area (it was Feb when we started the club) but for the summer you shouldn’t have that problem… Just have to figure out when/where to meet
I’m thinking of making posters lol “UNICYCLISTS WANTED” Because I seriously have no idea how to contact any of them… That oughtta look weird though… I actually started this idea as a joke, now it’s one of my seriously crazy ideas…
A guy from New York unicycliing club, called David Stone came to North Wales and posted on this forum that he was coming and would like to meet some welsh uni’ist. I answered his post and so did someone from holand who said his friend might be interested. Hence the NUTs (North Wales Unicycle Troupe) were born.
Stuart and I have held one further unimeet and plan to meet again in a couple of weeks in Llandudno.
In the first meeting we had myself and my family, David Stone and his family, Stuart and two other unicyclists from the Circus club that I attend.
For the second meeting Stuart had been in the local paper for his Muni activities and this had bought us to the attention of 3 other local Uni’ists.
We are still trying to get ourselves together to advertise the meets more widely locally, if you know what I mean. But so far we have got a strong core group of five or six people and are taking it from there.
So our ‘club’ has sort of grown naturally.
So perhaps try getting yourself in the local paper somehow. I guess getting going and getting yourself seen is the main thing.

Just take a look at this thread

Another thought is to contact these guys:http://eenwieleren.istof.nl/. I think they’re from your neck of the woods or will know someone.

Thanks, Cathy, Kapoute, now I’ll have to do is get in the local newspaper, haha, oh god, does green make me look fat? What shall I wear, and how the hell am I going to get in there in the first place… I’m building a website at the moment, I figured that would be the best thing to do for now
Thanks everyone
Dustin
If your local paper is like the ones inthe Uk you don’t have to do much to get in there. If you ride to work or school they will think thats a story. If you do a long (maybe 5km or more) ride to anywhere thats a story, if you take part in a fund raiser event for a charity thats a story. If you are going to vist a unicycle event in another town or country thats a big story.
I have beenin local papers with stories about taking part in charity rides, montain bike races and unicycle events .While riding to work got in the paper, and on radio and TV!

i was going to do the chelmsford little haven bike ride (5 mile ride) on my 24", but my friend only has a 16". it would’ve taken all day and by the time we would’ve got back the journalists would’ve gone home anyway.
I live in Northern New Jersey and I’ve been contemplating starting a unicycle club in my area to get more people involved in the sport.
Is there anyone else on these boards from Northern NJ interested in working together to start something?
