UNICON XV: Wellington, New Zealand 2009/2010

To our fellow unicyclists from around the world,

We are pleased to announce that Wellington, New Zealand has been confirmed as hosts of UNICON XV in 2009/2010.

The dates are 27 December 2009 to 7 Jan 2010.

We will host a full complement of events in some fantastic venues within walking distance of the event headquarters, located along the waterfront.

Come and celebrate The New Year with hundreds of unicyclists in the Southernmost capital city in the world.

We look forward to seeing you in 2009!

Secretary
NZ Unicycle Federation

Sweet!
looking forward to it

wicked! i just start unicycling and UNICON comes to my place! i b there:D

ah man, we usually get back to school January 2nd. I have a feeling I may not be able to make this one :frowning:

I can only hope though!

Flights/Hotels

Any suggestions on flights and lodging? My cursory search yielded $10,000 US for the three of us (wife, daughter, me). That’s a lot of car washes and bake sales!:frowning:

10,000! Right, ruddy, heck!!!

I’m sure something will pop up by the time of the event. Camping grounds most likely. Flight on the other hand… This is why not many New Zealanders holiday in the US.

new zealang i´m coming…
looking forward to it!

yeah i will hopefully go, if i can afford it and if i cbf.

I’v always wanted to go to new zealand. Thinking of probably kicking around for a couple weeks after. And it works out cause my employer shuts down for 2months a week before christmas.

Damn it! I’ve already got a previous engagement on during those days!
I’ll see if I can twist it around a little bit…
REALLY want to go!

Your from Melbourne! You have to come! Its like a 2 hour flight lol

it seems like probably the most beautiful place to have a Unicon. Most likely will yield less people then the one going on now and the last one. Plane tickets will most like be $3500 solo for me if not more by that time. But if some gig comes through for 4 or $5,000 i’ll be there.

-Shaun Johanneson

And we’d love to have you all there!

We’ll put up some photos of the venues and some maps once I get back from Unicon. We’ll also have a forum up.

In the meantime, have a look at the Unicon website: www.uniconxv.co.nz

I gave presentation at one of the workshops at Unicon 14. For those of you that weren’t there, we’re really excited about having Unicon in NZ. Here’s a few things I talked about:

-Dates are 27th Dec 2009 to 7th Jan 2010. That’s right, you get to celebrate New Years in New Zealand. Having an estimated 800 unicyclists in town should make for one awesome NY’s eve party! What’s the world record for number of unicyclists celebrating New Years in the one place?

-The main Unicon HQ is right in the middle of the city. Freestyle, Hockey, Basketball will all be played there. It’s an international venue that we use for various sports- netball, basketball etc. There are three gyms. It is a great chance to interact with the public because of it’s location. There will be some public workshops where we hope to have unicyclists teaching people how to ride

-Most venues are within 10min walk of each other. The Street/Trials will be at a large Skatepark right on the waterfront. MUni is along the town belt which is 10min up the road from the main restaurant/entertainment area of Wellington. The only venue that is slightly farther is the Track/Field events, which is a 10min bus ride away.

-Most costs in NZ are fairly low once you get here. It is the quiet time in terms of tourists, so there will be plenty of accomodation available. There are a few large backpacker hostels right across the road from Unicon HQ, and they cost about NZ$23-$28/night. Hotels are from NZ$100

-Wellington is pretty central in NZ and there are opportunities for plenty of day trips, or even a 2-3 day trip over to the South Island by ferry.

-We have a preliminary programme and some information up on the website www.uniconxv.co.nz
There’s not much more info there at the moment, but we will update it and upgrade the website later in the year. Give us your feedback on the events and timetable.

-We’re aiming to have registrations up and running by the end of the year.

Anyway, more updates once we get back home from Unicon 14.

Cheers,

Ken Looi

I’m definitely hoping to go. It seems flights from the West Coast USA will cost between $1500 and $2000 if purchased well in advance.

If you do plan any additional trips for attendees it would work best for me if they were before UNICON as I will already have to miss some school to stay until the 7th.

Awesome. Look forward to catching up with you again.

Actually I don’t think we’ve met. I haven’t been to a Unicon or international event since Beijing. But I look forward to meeting you.

Sorry, thought you were someone else I know :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m starting to plan a trip to Unicon, and I’m wondering if there will be lodging provided or if we have to find it on our own? I don’t really have a problem either way but I would like to know so I can plan people to split a hostel with or whatever.

I’m also planning on checking out NZ and possibly Australia depending on whether or not I am in school at that point or not. So if someone would like to travel with me, or provide me places to stay or wants to split some hostel costs it would be pretty sweet.

I was thinking it might even be interesting to rent a car or van with some people and do a road trip around NZ before, after, or both of Unicon!

Depending on how long i can get off work and if i can get the money for the trip, i would like to do something like that after Unicon

RAD! This is working out so well for me, most of my extended family is in NZ, so i get to stay in spare rooms, and it seems like my dad went to school near, ran at, or rowed at most of the places. Can’t wait to go and meet you all there. What uni’s you guys taking? Im gunna have to practice a bit so i dont look too bad…
