And we’d love to have you all there!
We’ll put up some photos of the venues and some maps once I get back from Unicon. We’ll also have a forum up.
In the meantime, have a look at the Unicon website: www.uniconxv.co.nz
I gave presentation at one of the workshops at Unicon 14. For those of you that weren’t there, we’re really excited about having Unicon in NZ. Here’s a few things I talked about:
-Dates are 27th Dec 2009 to 7th Jan 2010. That’s right, you get to celebrate New Years in New Zealand. Having an estimated 800 unicyclists in town should make for one awesome NY’s eve party! What’s the world record for number of unicyclists celebrating New Years in the one place?
-The main Unicon HQ is right in the middle of the city. Freestyle, Hockey, Basketball will all be played there. It’s an international venue that we use for various sports- netball, basketball etc. There are three gyms. It is a great chance to interact with the public because of it’s location. There will be some public workshops where we hope to have unicyclists teaching people how to ride
-Most venues are within 10min walk of each other. The Street/Trials will be at a large Skatepark right on the waterfront. MUni is along the town belt which is 10min up the road from the main restaurant/entertainment area of Wellington. The only venue that is slightly farther is the Track/Field events, which is a 10min bus ride away.
-Most costs in NZ are fairly low once you get here. It is the quiet time in terms of tourists, so there will be plenty of accomodation available. There are a few large backpacker hostels right across the road from Unicon HQ, and they cost about NZ$23-$28/night. Hotels are from NZ$100
-Wellington is pretty central in NZ and there are opportunities for plenty of day trips, or even a 2-3 day trip over to the South Island by ferry.
-We have a preliminary programme and some information up on the website www.uniconxv.co.nz
There’s not much more info there at the moment, but we will update it and upgrade the website later in the year. Give us your feedback on the events and timetable.
-We’re aiming to have registrations up and running by the end of the year.
Anyway, more updates once we get back home from Unicon 14.
Cheers,
Ken Looi
