Unicon 22 (2026)

I hope to make it. Last year was my first Unicon, I really enjoyed it.

I really want to go, but I would need to convince my parents to go to Austria for 3 weeks in the middle of Summer next year, and figure out how to take my uni there. Also get better at unicycling in certain disciplines. It’s likely I can’t go to this one, but Unicon 25 might be a possibility, though I am hoping to do an earlier one.

Getting one uni over is pretty straightforward: up to 26" fits pretty easily in a normal bag and up to 29" fits if you get the right shaped duffle (I’ve flown with my 29" about 15-20 flights). The challenging part is transporting 2 or more unicycles: to the last Unicon I flew with a 29" muni and 20" freestyle (I think in one checked bag and one carry-on) and borrowed a trial.

But the next Unicon is like a 3 hour drive for me!!

Some people use bike boxes to send their uni to other continents. You should go to a local bike shop and ask them for an already-used box

Yes, that’s the way to go if you have a large number of unicycles. But almost all airlines now charge a bike fee, which for most airlines is $200 per direction transatlantic and around $50 for shorter flights, so $400 for a transatlantic round trip! You can almost buy a unicycle for that amount.

If you cram 4 unis in a box and split the cost, then maybe. Otherwise it’s quite expensive. Plus, regular luggage gets lost or delayed less frequently than oversize. Quite a few unicyclists at the last Unicon were without unicycles for the first 3-4 days, as the bike boxes were delayed (one entire Italian team).

A less than 36" uni can be made to fit in normal luggage without the exorbitant bike fee. I have to think, but I don’t think I have ever paid the bike fee when flying with my unicycles for something like 20 trips with unicycle(s). My last transatlantic trip to Texas I got a 29" muni, a 24" muni and 2 freestyle unis in 2 checked bags and 4 carry-ons (with luggage for 4 people!) without bike fee.

So it turns out, I can go to Unicon 22!
I won’t be competing in any disciplines, I won’t bring any unicycles, (Are there unicycles I can borrow?) and I’ll only be there for the final 3 days.

My parents and siblings are not unicyclists, and they tend to think it’s stupid and I should go to the circus. So you can see why they don’t want to go to a unicycling event halfway across the world for three weeks. They don’t even want to be there for three days. (Which is how long we’re in Steyr for).

We’ll do many more things around Austria, go to different cities, etc.
I’m just happy to be there for some time.

Who else is going, and what are you competing in?

I’m still new(ish) to unicycling, I started last year. I plan on touring parts of Europe next year (from Australia) on my 36ā€ unicycle, and would love to go to Unicon (maybe even ride there from another country).

I’d love to compete in a distance race or event of some sort and I’d also like to try my hand at unicycle hockey (or other team sport). I’ve looked on the Unicon website and I’m pretty confused about the process.

Can I just book a competitor ticket and just like… compete? Do I need to qualify somehow?

For team sports, will there be teams looking for extra players, will teams be made with whoever is available, or will teams arrive locked-in and ready to go (i.e. suggesting I won’t be able to play)?

If anyone can answer any of these questions, I’d be awfully grateful :folded_hands:

Did you mean Austria?

No, I meant I am from Australia and intend on travelling/touring parts of Europe. I understand the confusion, perhaps I should have been clearer

For most disciplines and representing countries, you won’t need to qualify. Just book a competitor ticket and enjoy :dizzy:
If I recall correctly, mostly Japan and Germany require qualification steps for Freestyle events. Otherwise, that’s chill.

There are usually teams looking for extra players, in particular in B Tournaments.

This is awesome info! Thank you!

I am also investigating how competitive I might be in a road or track event. On a 36ā€ unicycle, I understand I would not qualify as a 'standard’ competitor, but rather ā€˜unlimited’? If this is true, is there any way to compete against others who do not have a geared hub?

I think I will book my ticket ASAP for that early bird price!

Lots of people don’t come to Unicon to be part of the fastest/best competitors. They come to practice, enjoy and meet other unicyclists. Even though you don’t think you can be competitive against these best riders, just come and enjoy!

That’s right! Whichever road event you want to participate in, a 36er is always considered as ā€œunlimitedā€ (and so are geared unis).

There’s sadly no way. However, there might be ungeared awards as well in the unlimited category. See the following - extracted from the Rulebook:

3D.6 Ungeared Awards
At Unicon, if there are five or more geared male riders in an Unlimited event, the fastest
three ungeared male riders will be awarded with an ungeared title for that event. Sim-
ilarly, if there are five or more geared female riders in an Unlimited event at Unicon,
the fastest three ungeared female riders will be awarded with an ungeared title for that
event. This is only for the overall classification, not for Age Groups. Other events can
choose to award the fastest three, one, or none of the ungeared riders as they wish

Dude, you are THE bro. This forum never ceases to amaze me in how prompt people are to help.

I’ve JUST found the 2019 rulebook, which I will comb through more in the coming days. Thank you so much for your clarification so far!

Of course, I’m not looking to win awards, but I want to compete to my best, and be sure that I’m not underestimating others’ abilities/overestimating my own. I haven’t spent any time with other unicyclists, so I just want to make sure I’m putting my best foot forward (I’m also pretty competitive and would like to be proud of my efforts as a first-timer).

Thanks again for all your help! Big ups to the community!

When I did the Dutch Unicycle Championships in NL, my only aim was not to end last. I did the 10km unlimited with a 32" uni. There was one other guy who was slower than me.
It was just fun to see so many other fellow unicyclists and someone let me experience a giraffe, which wasn’t really for me. I reckon Unicon will more much cooler, as you can meet with peeps all over the world.

FYI, it seems that the next rulebook should soon be published - we’re in the final step. You should probably wait for this updated book, so that you won’t read outdated info

Fair enough. I had the same objectives for my first competitions! I’m sure you’ll be proud of yourself whatever your times will be!
See you at Unicon!

Does anyone know if tickets are on sale yet? There is no working link for me on the Early Bird tickets on the registration page of the website, nor has there been for some time since I first checked some weeks ago. Am I missing something?

You’re not missing anything. We’re still waiting for the registration website to open:

As of now, we can see that 3 organizers have already registered to try the website out. We can suppose that it means the form is almost ready :crossed_fingers:

Ah, that’s good to know, thanks! So I am early even for an early bird

Something’s strange, though. Regular registrations open on 2026/01/01. That’s in roughly one month. Early bird registrations should probably open soon enough, or there won’t be any early birds

Isn’t it because they are waiting for the rulebook to be delivered by the IUF ?
