I too am considering attending unicon for the first time. At around only 1800 miles and 30 hours of driving I should be able to bring close to my whole fleet unis with me to participate in as much as I can. As someone who doesn’t plan on coming close to winning anything should I bother with a competitor registration or just do non-competitor anything? Any important equipment considerations that I might need for the event?
Hello UniBeetle
I would say: Register as a competitor, so that you can compete in the runs you like. Even if you don’t win anything. I have participated 6 times and only got one medal (a third place), but never mind!
Go and have fun
Best regards, Sanne
A lot of days there’s not much to do other than participate in the competitions, so if you want to ride, register as a competitor.
For equipment, just be sure you have knee pads you like because they’re required for a number of events.
I highly recommend paying a little bit more to register as a competitor instead of non-competitor. Even if you aren’t that good, the competitions are fun and you’ll meet so many cool people. Sign up for anything and everything you think you can do and just give it a go…trails, muni xc, cyclocross, track races (if you have the right unicycle), uphill, Downhill, basketball, hockey, road races, etc.
I promise you that you will have fun even if you come in last place. You will regret it when you get there and see all the riders having fun and wish you had entered as a competitor.
They have beginner, intermediate and expert classes for most events as well as age groups… and there might only be a couple people in your age group!
I do agree with you. I registered for Unicon 18 (Spain) as a non-competitor, thinking it was only for extremely great riders. But that’s wrong, anyone can take part and have fun!
Yup my flights are booked and competitor registration is done. Once I’m done with finals week for school I’ll get to work on equipment and figuring out how to pack it for the plane. I’m planning to bring a 26er muni, a 24 for track racing and maybe freestyle workshops, and my 4’ giraffe for road if I can get it set up and get comfortable at speed. If I don’t do the giraffe I think my 29er would be the biggest i can bring without paying oversize fees.
Awesome! I too agree that you should sign up for various events. Track, road and muni are pretty much good even for non-elite riders.
Choosing which unicycles to bring is sadly a difficult think. I am definitely bringing my 29" Muni with DH and XC tires (and probably longer cranks for uphill). And my 20" freestyle for hockey and basketball. Then it gets difficult as flying with 2 unis is fine and I could maybe take 3, but definitely not fly with more than 3: I would like to have my nice trial uni (maybe I can borrow?). And I have a nice 24" track uni, but probably can get by on my 20" (1ft and wheel walk are the only track events in which I actually have a chance in age group). And sadly the 36" for road is out for flying, so have to decide if I should instead take my old KH muni wheel with ISIS cranks so I can put say 89mm cranks on for road (my Q-Axle has 110/136mm cranks so way too long for road).
Im going this year just for a reason to take some time off of work and hopefully make some new friends.
FYI the deadline has been updated to July 1st so people have more time to create videos.
The Movie Night Directors, Wout and Jelle, are eagerly looking forward to unicycle enthusiasts sending in their videos to be premiered at Unicon’s movie night! This is a chance for unpublished videos to be displayed on a big screen to both Unicon participants and the general public.
Please see the rules below for submission:
-You must have a Unicon 21 competitor or non-competitor pass
-The video should not be longer than 3 minutes (If you need an exception to this rule, contact Wout and Jelle)
-The video needs to be in a landscape format
-The video should not be published before the event
-The video will need to be downloaded beforehand via cloud links (like WeTransfer or Google drive)
-If you wish, you can publish it as a premiere on YouTube the same evening as the event
-Please include English subtitles if your video is not in English
Deadline: July 1, 2024
To submit your video, email your cloud link to Wout and Jelle at unlimitedunicyclecrew@gmail.com with the title of your video, a short summary of the rider(s) and/or team in the video and – if applicable - some background information about the video. Include as topic: ‘Unicon Movie Night – Name’ with as name the name of the video or rider/team.
Looking forward to some new videos!
I have a greater chance of coming in last than I do first place for any event I participate in. Despite that I’m going as a competitor. Hope to meet new people and have fun while attending.
Would be fun to attend.
I would be interested to know if Europeans would still call to stop flying if they could not go to a dozen countries with an easy drive.
It seems very easy for someone who can have international travel by taking a train/bus to tell everyone else that they should remain in their countries and not fly anywhere.
I understand the carbon footprint issues we have and do my best to be responsible in every aspect of life I can. But living in Australia you essentially are saying “**** off and don’t leave your country” when you have the luxury of going everywhere.
Hi there,
humor on: you could try rowing or sailing, or ask your local travel agency for airship connections (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjBgEkbnX2I)
I did not research the numbers for flying in europe, but I guess they go up since corona is over. So, we Europeans and flying is not something to fit info one box. But in my opinion, mobility is one of the major areas where my decisions and climate emissions matter, so for me flying is an issue. I’d love to travel to Australia and New Zealand, but I’m not sure I will and climate aspects are part of my pros and cons.
And for your comment on easy traveling by train … you are welcome to try traveling with Deutsche Bahn (German Train Company), you might consider using your unicycle instead.
But then I think we won’t be solving world climate in this forum. I like this place for the friendly conversations as it is, and diving into climate topics could be an efficient way to change that. So from one European: please don’t feel ****ed off. If your journeys ever bring you to south germany, let’s have a ride together.
