Does your bike have a freewheel or did you put a giraffe type hub on it? How long did it take you to learn to ride it? (assuming it has a frewheel). Did you just keep doing longer and longer wheelies until you got comfortable on it? I can do about 20 cranks on my BMX bike, this was before I knew how to uni.

Isaac,

Yes, I’m using a freewheel. I spent years riding b*kes on one wheel before deciding to remove the dead weight. You can find more info on the project by searching past threads for unibike, unibiker, or 25k.

What angle is the seat on?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hey Andrew,

The seat (which has been switched back to a mountain b*ke seat) is pretty much parallel with the ground, which means it’s tilted way forward. I’ve tried unicycle seats, including the Miyata air seat, and they don’t seem to help any. To prevent numbness on the long rides, I’ve had better luck with sitting on the back portion of the seat. This leads to more butt soreness, but less numbness in the critical areas. However, the air seat sure is nice on the Yuni; after a few more rides, I might even begin to forget about the fiasco of the spinning seat bolts.

Sounds fun. You must be pretty good at doing manuals (not pedalling and not braking). Have you got any videos?

Andrew

Andrew,

No videos at the moment. Just the photos in the gallery. I’ll try to get a video after I relocate again. My employer loves to keep me on the go. Hopefully, I’ll be able to find some unicyclists in Louisiana. (New Orleans/Mandeville/Hammond/Slidell area). Anybody???

As far as ‘manuals’ (I’ve never heard that term), I don’t usually coast for very long, before I’m either braking or pedaling. But, I’m open to recommendations. I don’t seem to have very good balance, and therefore rely on brake and pedaling coordination.

Hey Unibiker,

Where ya living these days? Have you moved yet or are you still in Nashville?

Hey Issac,

E-mail me.

If you’ve ever seen New World Disorder or Disorder 2 (both mountain biking videos) the guy on them is really good at manualling. He rides down hills on his back wheel at 70miles/hr (literally!) and manuals most of the time (or so I assume).

Andrew

Here you go, I’ve put together a few frames from NWD. Notice how he stands up a lot of the time when manualling.

Have fun,
Andrew

Up to 70 mph without using a brake?!?! That’s incredible - literally!

It is physically impossible for pigs to look up into the sky.

I’m sure he uses it every now and then but for a lot of the time I’m pretty sure he’s not braking. Yes, it’s ridiculous.

Andrew

yeah, first time I saw NWD I was incredibly amazed by bobby root.

I have that video. That’s where I saw KH and decided I wanted to Uni instead of MB. Those are some crazy manuals, going down that hill with the car, I’d be dead scared of the cars that go by.

I haven’t seen the video, but 70 MPH on a mountain bike, riding on the
road, is not very plausible. I am a pretty fast descender on my road
bike, and the fastest I have ever managed is 89 kph (just over 55 mph).
There are surely roads where it’s possible to go faster–but there
aren’t a whole lot of them. To hit 60 would require a road with at least
a 15% sustained grade, straight enough that you don’t have to brake.
To hit 70–I’m not sure, but probably at least a sustained 20% grade,
or motor pacing.

And that’s before you get into the fact that doing it in a wheelie makes
the aerodynamics even worse.

manuals

Manuals can involve and most of the time do involve braking. You pretty much have to to keep balance. You were right about the no pedaling, though.

Hi Tommy,

I wasn’t even unpacked from the recent relocation to Murfreesboro when a promotion came through. I just returned from a house finding trip. I’ll move to Mandeville, Louisiana in about two weeks. I’m not sure about Uni opportunities in the area. I might have two Muni’s collecting dust. The windsurfing, however, will have a little extra spice, with the gators watching from the lakeshore.

Maybe we can hook up in Jackson sometime.

Jeff

I’ve managed over 60 on my road bike down-hill (that’s when the speedo stops) by slipstreaming a car. It’s pretty hairy though and I’d never do it on a MTB

Unibiker

I love the NWD vids, sorta what started me on unibiking. I have heard that argument before about not being able to go that fast on a mountain bike etc. But if you watch the vid closely, they show him being towed by a car in one bit. He is also riding huuuge
hills on NWD2 he is in San Fransisco(i think)to give you some idea of the hills he’s on  :sunglasses:
