Wow, cool! I was hoping you would know something about it, but I wasn’t expecting that you were one of the riders in the picture!
Thanks for the second picture. I can see much more detail, like the chain tensioner thing (or whatever you call it). It amazes me that two people can pedal one unicycle. Two people have to think and act like one. Otherwise any correction made would be twice as much as needed, say, if both people reacted normally to hitting a bump that slowed the wheel down.
I think this would make an fascinating thread in RSU. You could tell us about the learning process, what it was like to ride, the comments you received, plus maybe throw in a few anecdotes and a bit of history. Was different weight riders a problem? Can you still ride it? Could you only ride it with that one other person? Etc.
IF YOU HAVE A STORY IN YOU, PLEASE START A NEW THREAD (IN RSU) AND TELL US MORE! I’m sure it will be well-received. You are in the minority of minorities! I don’t think many people have ridden (or could ride) a tandem unicycle. Another thing to consider is that your story and pictures are absolutely worthy of being published in Uni magazine. The span of years makes the story even more endearing.
There’s a perpetual interest, also. I found this thread from 2006 with a picture of a similar-looking unicycle (with both seats facing out, which seems crazy). And if you scroll down in that thread, John Foss says –
“Yes, tandem unicycles are really hard to ride. Even with Sem Abrahams and Ken Fuchs on one, both expert riders, they were only able to go 10-20 meters and had great difficulty making turns. With more practice I’m sure they could get better, but tandem unicycles take something that’s hard to ride and make it quite a bit harder!”
And these threads, going back through the years –
Building a tandem uni: Two people on one wheel? (2006)
tandem unicycle (2005)
tandem unicycling
… where Ken Fuchs asks “I’d like to know who has built and/or ridden a tandem unicycle.”
Okay, LOL, so have I convinced you to tell your story? Pleeeeeeeease?
